Michelle Williams says that living with Ryan Gosling while filming Blue Valentine was horrible
Michelle Williams could have caught a nomination to the Academy Award for “Blue Valentine”, but the memories of his experience causing the film to be less than star.
Appearing in the “armchair expert” podcast this week, Williams recalled to live together with co -star Ryan Gosling before the suggestion of the writer and director of the film, Derek Cianfrance, to effectively capture the breakdown of the relationship of his characters.
“We take a break in filming. We filmed the first part when they are young and in love and everything is going very well,” said Williams. “And then we take a two -week break, and live together: office hours, baby, about 9 to 5”.
Clarifying that cohabiting with Gosling was strictly a “professional situation,” added: “So we made these improvisations during the day, honestly, to discover ways to bother and destroy what we had done.”
Released in 2010, “Blue Valentine” follows the working class couple Dean and Cindy (played by Gosling and Williams, respectively) during a damn patch in their marriage. The first days of Dean and Cindy’s relationship are remembered in emotional flashbacks as the film takes advantage of darker issues, such as unwanted pregnancy and conjugal abuse.

In retrospect, Williams felt that living with Gosling was a “horrible” experience, although not because of any specific failure of his co -star, and would not advise other actors to do everything possible for a role.
“I don’t know if someone could return to work like this, because you have a team that is waiting. You’re paying people,” he said. “I mean, it is such a small film, such a low budget and a small crew, but you are taking a great period of falling in the middle of the thing and for what purpose?”
Williams, who currently stars in the “dying of sex” of Hulu, prefers to maintain his professional duties as an actor at a clearer distance from his private life these days.
“A difficult day at work for me now, I’m sorry and I checked it, but I definitely know that I can go home,” he said. “I can really close the door.”
In the 15 years elapsed since the launch of “Blue Valentine”, Cianfrance has wrote and directed several acclaimed projects, including the 2020 HBO miniseries “I know this is true”, starring Mark Ruffalo.
Speaking to Indiewire in 2024, Cianfrance recalled how he had completed a total of 66 drafts of the “Blue Valentine” script before putting the film in production after many unexpected delays, with Gosling and Williams such as the stars of the film.
“What was a curse for so many years became a blessing. [That film] It was a ray. It only happens once, “he said.” The moments when Ryan was in his life, where Michelle was in his life, where I was in my life, where the entire crew was, there was an alchemy that happened. ”
