Patti Lupone apologizes for the degrading comments about Audra McDonald, Kecia Lewis
Patti Lupone issued an apology to Broadway Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald actors during the weekend after their previous comments on both women extracted a violent reaction from the theatrical community.
The three -time winner of the Tony Award shared a statement in her social networks platforms on Saturday in which she was “deeply unfortunate” for the words “degrading and disrespectful” that he had used, particularly towards Lewis, in a controversial interview with the New York published last week.
“I regret my impertinent and emotional responses during this interview, which were inappropriate, and I am devastated that my behavior has offended others and has run against what we appreciate in this community,” he wrote. “I hope to have the opportunity to speak personally with Audra and Kecia to offer my sincere apologies.”
Lupone’s apology occurred one day after the launch of an open letter addressed to the American theater wing and the Broadway League that asks the actor of “Agatha All Ground” Blacks

The letter had been signed by more than 600 members of the Broadway community, including the winning actors of Tony James Monroe Iglehart and Maleaah Joi Moon.
In his statement, Lupone said that he agreed with the content of the letter, pointing out: “From drama clubs of the intermediate school to professional stages, the theater has always tried to get up and welcome those who feel that they do not belong to any other place.”
“I made a mistake, I assumed all responsibility for it and I am committed to doing this right,” he added. “Our entire theatrical community deserves better.”
Lupone’s interview with The New Yorker had intended to promote his next appearance in the Renaissance series “Sex and the City”, “And just like that …”, which debuted his third season on Thursday.
In the chat, Lupone was asked about a 2024 incident in which he had complained about the sound signals of Alicia Keys “Hell’s Kitchen” being audible in a neighboring theater that housed “The Roommate”, his most recent work. Almost at the same time, a video in which Lupone exploded “Hell’s Kitchen”, which presents a predominantly black cast, for being “too strong” went viral in Tiktok.

Lewis, who won a Tony last year for his performance in “Hell’s Kitchen”, criticized Lupone’s actions at that time, calling them “racially microphree” and “rooted in privileges” in a long Instagram video that McDonald responded with support emojis.
When the New Yorker asked Lupone about the debacle, he considered that Lewis was a “bitch” and suggested that the actor, who appeared in “Dreamgirls” and “Once on This Island”, among other successful musicals, had no right to call himself a “veteran” of Broadway.

She offered a similar reprimand when asked about McDonald’s support for the video. “That is typical of Audra. She is not a friend,” she said, while alluding to what the exit described as a “crack of the years.”
In a teaser for his appearance in “News Mornings” to promote his performance nominated for Tony in “Gypsy”, however, McDonald suggested that any type of crack that Lupone felt that it was unilateral.
“I have not seen it in about 11 years just because we have been busy, only with life and things,” he said in the interview, he was broadcast in its entirety next week. “So I don’t know what crack is talking about, but you would have to ask him.”
