Israeli naval forces seized the boat without incident on early Monday to about 125 miles from the coast of Gaza, according to the coalition, which, together with the rights groups, condemned Israel’s actions as a violation of international law. The Freedom Flotilla coalition said three activists, including Thunberg, had been deported together with a journalist. He said he had encouraged some of the groups to do this so they could speak freely about their experiences.

Eight other passengers rejected deportation and were arrested before their case was heard by the Israeli authorities. Adalah, a group of legal rights in Israel that represents the activists, said that the eight were expected to be taken before a court later on Tuesday.

“His arrest is illegal, politically motivated and a direct violation of international law,” said the coalition in a statement. He asked that the remaining passengers were released without deportation and said that their lawyers would demand that they be allowed to complete their trip to Gaza.

Sabine Haddad, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Interior of Israel, said the activists who were being deported on Tuesday had resigned to appear before a judge. Those who will not face one and will be held for 96 hours before being deported, he said.

Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament that is of Palestinian descent, was also among the passengers aboard Madleen. “It is unforgivable, it is a violation of our rights. It is a pirate attack in international waters,” Toribio told journalists.

On Monday, Adalah, the rights group, said that Israel had no “legal authority” to take care of the ship, because the group said it was in international waters and that it did not address Israel but to the “territorial waters of the Palestine state

“The arrest of unarmed activists, who operated civilly to provide humanitarian aid, is equivalent to a serious violation of international law,” said Adalah in a statement.

Amnesty International said that Israel was mocking international law with the Naval raid and asked the country to release activists immediately and unconditionally.

Israel said his actions were consistent with international law.

Israel saw the ship as an advertising trick, calling it the “Yate Selfie”. Israeli officials said the flotilla was bringing “scarce” help with what amounted to less than a product truck.

The flotilla has made it clear that its repeated attempts to reach the Palestinian territory with vessels that transport help and activists are aimed both to raise awareness about the Israeli block and to bring any food to the enclave.

Israel and Egypt have imposed varying degrees of a blockade in Gaza since Hamas seized the power of rival Palestinian forces in 2007. Israel says that the blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas from mattersing weapons, while critics say it is equivalent to a collective punishment of the Palestine population of Gaza.
