An Italian museum is asking visitors to respect the art on display after a tourist couple broke a glass -covered chair before fleeing.

The Palazzo Maffei in Verona, Italy, launched security video images this week that shows a man and a woman who takes photos of each other while pretending to sit in the so -called “van Gogh” chair by Nicola Bolla. Art furniture is covered with hundreds of swarovski crystals made of polished glass and machine cut and is named in honor of Vincent Van Gogh.

In a moment, man seems to slide and fall on the chair, crushing him. Museum officials said the couple fled before staff members noticed what happened.

“The nightmare of each museum has come true,” the museum said in a publication on social networks that share the images.

Museum officials said the Local Police has been contacted on the couple, which has not been identified, said News themezone BBC partner.

“Sometimes we lose the brain to take a photo, and we do not think about the consequences,” said Vanessa Carlon Museum director to the BBC. “Of course it was an accident, but these two people left us, that is not an accident.”

Two of the legs of the chair were broken, but the museum was able to restore them. The chair is back on display.

Carlotta Menegazzo, an art historian based in the Palazzo Maffei, told the BBC that, although the chair looks resistant, the frame is mostly hollow.

“In the chair there was a note warning the people who do not touch, and of course it is placed on a pedestal, so it is quite clear that it is not a real chair,” he said.

According to the BBC, the incident took place in April, and the museum only launched the images of the security camera this week to raise awareness.

“We are sharing this episode not only for registration, but to start a real awareness campaign on the value of art and respect it deserves,” said the museum in a publication on social networks.

The Palazzo Maffei opened in 2020 and has 650 pieces on display.
