The use of long -term chatgpt could have negative effects on brain function.

This is according to a study led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which found that the use of a large language model (LLM) to write multiple essays for a period of four months could hinder cognitive skills.

In the study, 54 participants were divided into three groups.

A group used chatgpt, a LLM product made by OpenAI, to write an essay.

The second group used only a search engine, and the third group used only its own brains, according to a MIT press release.

The participants underwent three sessions where they completed the same task. Then, in the fourth session, the LLM group was asked to write an essay without any tool, and the group “only cerebral” was asked to use a LLM for their help.

During each session, the researchers recorded the brain activity of the participants using an EEG monitor to evaluate their “cognitive commitment and cognitive load” and to determine their neuronal activity, the version declared.

Participants also provided their own individual comments during interviews.

Human teachers and an artificial intelligence agent obtained evaluations.

“The EEG analysis presented solid evidence that LLM, search engines and brain groups had significantly different neuronal connectivity patterns, reflecting divergent cognitive strategies,” the researchers wrote.

The participants showed less brain connectivity when they used the tools to help write their trials, according to the study.

“The brain group only exhibited the strongest and wider handling networks; the group of search engines showed an intermediate commitment; and the LLM assistance caused the weakest general coupling,” the researchers wrote.

In the fourth session, the participants who changed from LLM to only brain showed “weaker neuronal connectivity” and less cognitive commitment.

The LLM group also had less capacity to remember information on the trials that had just written.

According to these findings, the researchers said there could be a “possible decrease in learning skills” among LLM users.

“The use of LLM had a measurable impact on our participants, and although the benefits were initially evident, as we demonstrated in the course of four sessions … The participants of the LLM group served worse than their counterparts in the group of only brain at all levels: neuronal, linguistics, linguistics. [and] writing down, “they wrote.

Potential limitations

The findings have risen to Arxiv, a predimpression service, but have not yet been reviewed in pairs, since the researchers indicated that “all conclusions must be treated with caution and as preliminary.”

There was also a limited number of participants who were all from the same geographical area.

“For future work, it will be important to include a greater number of participants from various origins, such as professionals in different areas and age groups, as well as ensuring that the study is more balanced by gender,” the researchers said.

Only Chatgpt was used in the study; Future research could incorporate other LLM.

The EEG technology used to analyze brain connectivity could also have some limitations, since researchers shared plans to use FMRI (functional magnetic resonance) in future studies.

“Our findings depend on the context and focus on writing an essay in an educational environment and cannot be generalized in all tasks,” they said.

“Future studies should also consider exploring the longitudinal impacts of the use of the tool on memory retention, creativity and the fluidity of writing.”

Dr. Harvey Castro, a doctor of the emergency room and “Futurist of AI” based in Texas, said he sees this study as a “called Neuro-Ava”, especially for younger brains.

“Chatgpt can make you 60% faster, but that speed reaches the price of the neuro-compromise,” said Castro, who did not participate in the study, News Digital.

“Cerebral connectivity collapses 79 neuronal links to only 42, and 83% of users cannot cite their own trials minutes later. Neuroplasticity research tells us that developing brains will feel this harder.”

In emergency medicine, said Castro, doctors call this “not coding.”

“The brain is not processing and stores information,” he said. “When neuronal connectivity falls in almost half, we are seeing what researchers call ‘cognitive debt’.”

For medical students, the inability to codify and remember information under pressure could have serious implications for clinical decision making, Castro said.

“The same neural networks that consolidate trial information are involved in diagnostic reasoning,” he said.

The use of LLM for prolonged periods can be convenient, but it could cause cognitive muscles to “atrophen” over time, the expert warned.

However, there was an encouraging finding.

In education, he emphasized the need for “cognitive development of AI” periods.
