Zohran Mamdani dismissed President Donald Trump calling him “communist” after his historic victory to be the Democratic candidate for the mayor of New York City.

When asked about the president’s comments during an appearance in “Meet The Press” on Sunday, Mamdani smiled when he told the host Kristen Welker why “no” is a communist and why he is ready to face Trump’s attacks.

“I have already had to start getting used to the fact that the president will talk about how I see myself, how dreams, where I am, who I am,” he said. “Ultimately, because he wants to distract what I am struggling, and I am fighting for the people who work in which he directed a campaign to empower, who has since betrayed.”

Mamdani then explained the reason he calls himself a democratic socialist, citing the words of the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

“When we talk about my policy, you know what is called a democratic socialist in many ways inspired by Dr. King’s words ago,” he said. “‘Call it democracy or call it democratic socialist. There must be a better distribution of wealth for all the children of God in this country'”.

“As income inequality has decreased throughout the country, it has increased in New York City and, ultimately, what we need is a city where each person can prosper,” Mamdani continued.

When addressing that wealth gap, the New York state assembly also told Welker why he does not believe there are billionaires.

“I do not think that we should have billionaires because, frankly, it is so much money at a time of such inequality, and ultimately, what we need more is equality in our city and in our state and in our country. And I hope to work with everyone, including billionaires, to make a city that is more fair for all of us.”
