A “unusually large” shoes stash of 2,000 years old unearthed in a Roman site in northern England has left archaeologists looking for an explanation, News told him Thursday.

Eight large shoes, including one that measures almost 13 inches long, equivalent to size 49 in Europe and size 15 in the USA., Have been found by archaeologists of Vindolanda Charity Trust in recent months.

“Eight Magna shoes are now registered as 30 cm or more in length and this includes one that contains the current record of being the largest shoe in the trust with 32.6 cm long,” said the Museum and Fort of the Roman army in a press release.

Trust was established in 1970 to excavate, conserve and share Roman remains in Vindolanda and Carvoran, both part of the World Heritage Site of the Adriano wall in northern England.

The shoes were discovered in a defensive ditch, often used by the Romans as a garbage dump, in the strong Magna Roman in Northumberland.

Only a small fraction of shoes in the vast existing vining collection is of a similar size, while around a quarter of the Magna site are in this size range, according to Rachel Frame, a senior archaeologist in the project.

She called him “really unusual.”

“Now we are all trying to solve who could have been here,” Frame told News.

He added that they were eager to know “what regiments they would have parked in Magda” and why exactly there are “so many large shoes on this site compared to others.”

The team reported having found the first “exceptionally large shoe on May 21 and has continued to discover more since then, according to the Vindolanda website.

“You need specific conditions of the soil with very low oxygen for organic objects made of things such as wood, leather, textiles, things like that, to survive during this period of time,” the frame explained.

He pointed out that the team is investigating the history of the Roman Empire to obtain answers, emphasizing people from different cultures and background would probably have met at the site.

“When people think of the Romans, they think of the Italians, sometimes they forget how broad it was the empire and how far it extended,” said Frame.

A video released by the trustee shows the vast variety of unearthed footwear on the site. The video presents Dr. Elizabeth Greene, an associated professor at the University of the Occidental Occasion, who has seen and measure all shoes in the Vindolanda collection.

“I think there is something very different here in Magna, even from this small discovered exhibition, it is clear that these shoes are much larger on average than the majority of the Vindolanda collection,” Greene said.

In a separate social networks publication on Thursday, the trust said that archaeologists had also discovered another old artifact: a Boj comb.

“Magna is doing the news this week with all our giant shoes, but they are not the only artifacts in Fort’s ditches,” says the publication. “This morning a beautiful Boj comb was discovered.”
