Sleeping with wet hair could cause unexpected problems.
Skin and hair experts agree that going to bed before drying their hair can lead to problematic scalp problems, and even hidden bacteria on their sheets.
Briana Delvecchio, a stylist at Ashley Lauren Beauty Lounge in New York, shared an interview with News Digital that always advises its clients not to accommodate with wet hair for several reasons.
This daily beauty routine could be ruining your hair, experts warn.
When the hair is wet, the hydrogen bonds in the threads are temporarily broken, which makes it more elastic, fragile and prone to breakage, he warned.
“Combine that with friction of its pillow cover, and it is a recipe for open tips, tangles and long -term damage,” Delvecchio said.

The scalp “also receives a success,” he added, since a humid scalp caught against a pillow during the night creates a warm and humid atmosphere that is ideal for fungal growth and bacterial accumulation.
“This can cause scalp or dandruff irritation, or even make their roots feel fatty in the morning,” the stylist warned.

Sleeping with humid hair can also affect facial skin. “That humidity is transferred to its pillow cover, which can house bacteria and oil that contribute to outbreaks or sprouts in sensitive skin,” said Delvecchio.
Dr. Noah Gratch, MD, a dermatologist certified by the Board in New York, told News Digital in a separate interview that also recommends against Sleeping With Wet Hair.

“While it is not dangerous, there are dermatological and hair problems associated with habit,” he said.

Friction against the pillow can exacerbate fragile wet hair damage, leading to breakage and detachment over time, the dermatologist warned.
The wet environment can also contribute to the problems of scalp and skin, agreed.

“A constantly humid scalp creates a warm and humid atmosphere that can promote the excessive growth of Malassezia, a yeast that naturally lives in the scalp but can proliferate in these conditions,” Gratch said.
“This can contribute to the scalp conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis (a chronic skin inflammatory condition) or dandruff.”

Sleeping with humid hair also increases the risk of developing folliculitis, a skin condition that causes irritation, inflammation and protuberances, or fungal infections in people with “skin barriers already compromised or fatty horns,” Gratch said.

The dermatologist reiterated that the humidity trapped in the pillow cover can house bacteria, fungi and dust mites.
“Prolonged skin contact with this humidity can contribute to acne outbreaks, particularly fungal acne or exacerbate existing skin conditions such as eczema,” he warned.

To avoid these complications, Delvecchio recommends drying the hair and using an output conditioner to protect the tufts before bedtime, in addition to slowly wiped or braid without tightening the hair once it is mostly dry.
“A simple routine exchange is very useful to maintain your hair, scalp and healthy skin,” he added.
