If you are told to imagine an alpine rescue dog, it is likely that it evokes a mental image of a San Bernardo or a German shepherd. A long hair Chihuahua I probably don’t go to mind. But it may be time to give the tiny yapperios due respect.

A man, who has not been appointed, was walking on Friday by the rates glacier in southern Switzerland, with his chihuahua with long white and brown hair, when he took a step on a snow bridge and suddenly immersed himself 26 feet in a crack.

Cut in the glacier ice, the man used an amateur Walkie-Talkie that he had to ask for help, according to an online published statement for the Air Zermatt rescue service. A nearby person received the call of anguish and transmitted it to emergency services, but they could not locate the man, according to Air Zermatt.

When a Air Zermatt helicopter rescue team reached the area in the afternoon, the service said that the search for the missing man, “was difficult. The glacier surface was wide and the hole was barely visible.”

“Then a decisive moment,” the statement continued: “One of the rescue specialists saw a small movement in a rock: the Chihuahua!”

The little dog was seen perched right next to the hole in which its owner had fallen.

“Thanks to the dog’s behavior, the crew was able to locate the exact site of the accident. The rescuers struck the victim and could save him,” said Air Zermatt.

“The small dog did not move throughout the operation and closely followed all the movements of rescue specialists,” said the company, which also operates a regional airline. “It is fair to say that his behavior contributed significantly to the successful rescue. The dog is a four -legged hero who may have saved his teacher’s life.”
