Approximately 1,500 young tarantulas were found inside plastic containers that were filled in chocolate sponge sponge cake sent to an airport in western Germany.

The poisonous spiders were found at Colonia Bonn airport three weeks ago after Customs officials were attacked by a “remarkable smell” that did not coincide with the expected aroma of the alleged candy, the officials said in a press release on Monday.

“My colleagues at the airport are regularly surprised by the content of prohibited packages around the world, but the fact that they found around 1,500 small plastic containers containing young tarantulas in this package even the most experienced among them,” said the spokesman for the Customs Office of Colonia, Jens Ahland.

The package has arrived from Vietnam, authorities said.

Ahland said it was an “extraordinary seizure” that “we are sad to see what some people do to animals exclusively for profit.”

The authorities said that most of the tarantulas did not survive the trip, in a suspicion of violation of the German animal welfare rules. The survivors were delivered to the care of an expert handle.

Ahland told News that the estimated shipping value is still being evaluated.

The criminal procedures are underway against the recipient provided in the Sauerland region partly for alleged violations of not paying adequate import tariffs and making the appropriate customs statements, the office said.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, the tarantulas are large and hairy arachnids that average approximately five inches long like adults, although when they spread, their leg section is up to 11 inches. They can live up to 30 years in nature, according to National Geographic.
