Chronic delay can be frustrating for those who are waiting, it is often attributed to laziness and carelessness.

But experts say that a health problem called time blindness could be the fault of perpetual delay.

Often misunderstood as an inability to perceive time, the condition interrupts a person’s ability to estimate how long it will have to complete the tasks, affecting everything from daily routines to long -term productivity.

In daily life, time blindness can manifest as lost deadlines, difficulty to make the transition between tasks or underestimate how long a task will take, resulting in stress and frustration, according to experts.

Socially, it can be interpreted as disrespectful or careless behavior towards others, potentially harmful relationships.

“The cardinal characteristic of time blindness is an inability to estimate a time interval,” Dr. Mauran Sivananthan, Henry Ford Health psychiatrist in Detroit, Michigan, told News News News.

This can negatively affect a person’s ability to use time as a guide to plan the day.

Laurie Singer, behavior analyst certified by the Laurie Behavioral Services Board in California, reiterated that those with agnosia time, another name for the condition, cannot properly process the passage of time.

“Usually, they struggle to know how long it has passed or how long it is during a task,” he told News Digital.

“When something has to be done, it is better to do it immediately.”

For example, someone can calculate how long it has been preparing in the morning, running through the door and being late.

Others can be absorbed in an activity (a symptom known as hyperfocus), losing the trace of time completely, the expert said.

Causes of time blindness

Time blindness is considered a “executive function problem,” said Sivananthan.

Executive function refers to skills such as working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibition control.

These skills are essential for daily tasks such as making plans, solving problems and adapting to new situations, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Time blindness is more commonly related to ADHD (hyperactivity attention deficit disorder).

“Several parts of the brain are affected by ADHD, including prefrontal cortex and cerebellum,” said Sivananthan. “There have been many studies analyzing the role of the cerebellum in time processing.”

The condition can also appear in individuals with autism, TOC (obsessive compulsive disorder), traumatic brain injuries, depression, anxiety and even conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, experts say.

Time blindness does not appear in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which is the reference book accepted for mental health and brain-related conditions, Singer said.

Although there is no formal diagnosis for condition, the inability to perceive and manage time is included in the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD.

How to handle time blindness

The treatment of time blindness often implies a multi -layer approach, beginning by minimizing delays, according to Sivanathan.

“When you have to do something, it is better to do it immediately,” he told News Digital.

It can also be useful to use external devices to monitor how long it is dedicated to an activity.

Sivanathan often recommends that your patients establish timers before entering the shower or start a project, for example.

Singer added: “When they are provided with some of the tools to relieve symptoms, such as starting every day in the same way to create a rhythm, I have seen patients address it with exceptional diligence.”

Experts agree that the usual behavior can bring the benefits of “structure, predictability, reduction of decision fatigue, greater productivity and greater time management.”

Sivananthan recommends breaking large tasks into smaller and more manageable pieces and creating consistent routines that “train the brain” and reduce cognitive load.

While time blindness may not disappear completely, it can be significantly reduced by using consistent routines, visual aid and regular therapy, according to experts.
