Traveling in one of Canada’s most busy airports stopped briefly on Tuesday after the Federal Police received a report that a small plane had been kidnapped, authorities said.
The police mounted in the Canadian Royal in the western province of Canada in British Columbia said that at 1:10 pm local time received a report that a Cessna 172 “had been kidnapped from the area of the island of Vancouver and that they entered the airspace near Vancouver International Airport.”
“The suspect was the only occupant of the aircraft,” the statement added.
In a recording of the air traffic control published in Liveatc.net, an official can be heard indicating: “We have an incident just above our airspace here, a 172 kidnapped,” said Vancouver Sun.
The plane landed in Vancouver at 1:45 pm and the “suspect was arrested without incident,” said the RCMP, who refused to provide more details.
The images published by the CBC public broadcaster and the video shared online show the small white Cessna surrounded by security vehicles on a track after landing in Vancouver.
The CBC reported that Cessna was operated by a flying club in Victoria, the provincial capital located on the island of Vancouver.
Witness Paul Heeney told the CBC that he was driving when he noticed a small plane flying low and right bank.
“A few minutes later, we saw a second pass … The plane was making a large circle in the direction of the clock needles,” he said.
Vancouver International Airport said in a statement that nine incident were diverted during the incident with a high temporal for the operations ordered at the airport of the west coast. Flights connected to ground for 39 minutes.
The head of airport communications, Stephen Smart, told CBC that “it could have lasted much more.”
“This is not something we would experience regularly,” said Smart
