Police in the state of southern Karnataka in India said Wednesday that they found a Russian woman and her two young daughters who live in isolation in a remote forest cave.
Police, identified by the woman, identified as Nina Kutina, 40, and her daughters, 6 and 4 years old, during a routine patrol to Ramatirtha Hill, a popular tourist site on the coast of Karnataka, on July 9. Police officer Sridhar SR said the family had been living in the cave for more than a week.
Police told the BBC that they had been patrolling the area to warn foreigners of possible dangers in the forest when they found the woman and the two girls.
“The area is popular among tourists, especially foreigners. But it has many snakes and is prone to landslides, especially during the rainy season. To guarantee the safety of tourists, we begin to patrol the forests last year,” said M Narayana, police superintendent of the Utara Kannada district.
When the officers approached the cave, “a little blonde girl ran,” police told the BBC. When the officers followed her inside, they found Kutina and the other girl.

Police said they were taking measures to repatriate Kutina to Russia for exaggerating her visa. She and her children have been transferred to a nearby detention center for foreigners who live illegally in India.
The police said in a statement that Kutina spent her time in the cave meditating in the light of the candles, and that she told the investigative officers that she was “interested in staying in the forest and worshiping God.”
Sridhar said that Kutina told police that he had worked as a Russian language tutor in Goa, a coastal tourist state in southern India.
“It’s nothing more than her love for the adventure that brought her here,” said Sridhar.
He said the police found photos of Hindu deities on the interior walls of the cave where Kutina had been living. In a photograph provided by the police, it is seen in front of the improvised curtains made of red saris that covered the entrance to the cave.
The Russian embassy in New Delhi did not immediately respond to a comment request.
The police statement said Kutina sent a message to her friends after they found her.
“Our peaceful life in the cave is over: our Cuevas house destroyed,” he wrote in the message, according to the statement.
News contacted Kutina on the phone, but she declined to comment.
On Tuesday, he told News Press Trust of India that spent his days in the cave painting, singing, reading books and living peacefully with his children.
In video interviews with the Ani and PTI news agencies in India, he said he had four children between the ages of 20 and 5 years and said that his older one, “my great son”, who died in a traffic accident on GOA last year, the BBC reported.
The authorities say that his second child is 11 years old and is in Russia and that they have shared the information with the consulate, according to the BBC.
