New Delhi – At least 33 people were killed and dozens wounded by rays in the state of Bihar in eastern Eastern India, authorities said on Friday. The deaths occurred when the powerful storms and monsoon rains mistreated the state.

Most of the deaths were reported on Wednesday and Thursday, when the intense storms hit at least 10 districts in Bihar. Most of the victims were agricultural workers, including an old man killed by a ray strike in the Nalanda district while he was with grazing cattle. Two women were seriously injured in the same place and were treated by burns.

The state government has urged residents to take precautions, including the rest inside during bad weather. Niten Kumar, Bihaha’s Prime Minister, announced a government compensation of 4 million Indian rupees (around $ 4,600) for the families of the murdered.

It is likely that storms and rays continue, since monsoon’s rains are expected to continue for weeks in the region. The Department of Meteorology of India has predicted the light to heavy rains in most of the southern and northeast of Bihar until at least July 24.

The rays are common during the Monzón season in the north and east of India. According to government data, more than 2,500 people in India are run over for a ray every year. In Bihar alone, at least 243 people were killed by rays last year, and 275 died in 2023. In November 2023, rays during non -seasonal rains killed 24 people in the Western Indian state of Gujarat.

A typical ray includes around 300 million volts of electricity, which is capable of causing instant death or serious burning injuries. Scientists say that climate change is leading to greater activity of more intense rays and storms. The increase in the temperatures of the surface of the earth and the sea means that there is more thermal energy to feed the thunderstorms that cause rays.

A study by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, said rays in the United States could increase by 12% for each degree of Celsius at the average temperature. A person was killed and more than a dozen others were injured after being hit by Lightning in the municipality of JacksonNew Jersey on Wednesday.

The east and northeast region of India is also prone to floods that have killed dozens of people and move hundreds of thousands during the Monzón season. Seasonal rains also wreaked havoc in southern India last year. In July 2024, MASSIVE LAND SLIDINGS SOCCADO BY THE MONZO RAINS KILLED AT LEAST 158 PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH STATE OF KERALA.
