New Delhi – At least seven children were killed and another 20 wounded when a portion of the roof of a school collapsed in the state of western Rajasthan on Friday morning, police said.

The incident occurred around 8:00 am local time at the Government Primary School in the Jhalawar district village, while the students met for their morning assembly.

Around 60 children were at school when the roof of the single -floor building collapsed, burying the students under debris.

The residents of the area rushed to the scene and managed to rescue dozens of students, and the police and other government workers also joined the rescue efforts.

All injured students, between the ages of eight and 11, were being treated in a local hospital. It was said that two were in critical condition.

The Indian media showed a video of residents gathered at the collapse site, with the relatives of some students crying.

Some reports say that the school building was in a detailed condition and pointed out that persistent and strong rain in recent weeks may have been a factor behind the deadly collapse. It is the monsoon season in India, and the storms have already brought misery to the eastern part of the country, with dozens of people killed by lighting strikes In recent weeks.

However, the Jhalawar district official, Ajay Singh, said the school building had not been indicated as insecure after a recent survey.

“Detailed investigation will be carried out and strict measures against those responsible will be taken,” Singh told the media gathered in the city.

The Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, described the incident as “tragic and deeply sad.”

“My thoughts are with the affected students and their families at this difficult time. Praying for the rapid recovery of the injured. The authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected,” he said in a publication on social networks.

Rajasthan’s state education minister Madan Dilawar said experts were examining the stability of other buildings on the school campus.

Mortal construction collapses are not uncommon during the monsoon rains in India. Many buildings in India are weak due to the insufficient application of construction security codes, and that leaves them particularly vulnerable to floods.
