Before we forget to shine in your dream representation of the first queer love

When Juan Pablo Di Pace is asked about the inspirations for his age drama “Before We Forget”, he does not quote specific movies or directors.

On the other hand, the Argentine actor, writer and director points out “Preludio to the Tarnteior of A Faun”, one of the most beloved symphonic works of the French composer Claude Debussy, written in 1894 and appeared in the film.

“I am a great admirer of ballet, opera and classic music, so the film’s structure is quite symphonic,” Di Pace told News in an interview. “There is something in tense and beautiful music, and then it reaches a crescendo and it is ecstasy.”

Emotions are executed in “Before We Forget”, which expanded to select cinemas throughout the country on Friday after its launch of New York and Los Angeles earlier this month. The film, which marks the writing of scripts and the debut as director of Di Pace, is a dreamy and melancholic version of his real -life experiences with First Love and Heartbreak.

Originally entitled “Duino”, the film follows Matias (played by Santiago Madrussan), an Argentine student and a filmmaker who is part of a boarding school focused on the arts in Italy in 1997.

Matias is soon attracted to Alex’s bravery (Oscar Morgan), a Swedish classmate of free spirit. After a joke goes wrong, Alex is expelled from school, but maintains a long distance friendship with Matias. When Matias is invited to join Alex and his family for Christmas on his Palaciega farm, he begins to wonder if the gestures of his new friend are indicative of deepest and non -platonic feelings about his relationship.

The first criticisms of “Before We Forget” have compared it favorably with the 2017 romantic drama “Call Me by Your Name”, starring Timothée Chalamet. The scenes in the film also remember the series of queer themes of Netflix “Heartstopper”, as well as the clearest half of the dark “Saltburn” comedy of 2023.

“Before We Forget” is the writing of scripts by Juan Pablo Di Pace and the debut as director of functions. The star of “Fuller House”, on the left, also portrays the adult version of the character of Madrussan, Matias.

The movie collective

Di Pace, better known by the US public for his role in “Fuller House” and his period in “Dancing With the Stars”, began to develop “before we forget” after watching homemade videos of his days as a student in United World College of the Adriatic. He associated with the co -director Andrés Pepe Estrada, a friend for a long time, and filmed much of the film on the Trieste campus, Italy of Trieste of the school.

It also appears in the film as the middle -aged matias, who is currently a film director from Buenos Aires who struggles to find a satisfactory ending for the romantic film in which he is working. Matias teenage memories are activated when he receives an unexpected opportunity to return to meet with Alex (played by August Wittgenstein as an adult) after 25 years.

Although Di Pace extended a lot from his experienced experience, he hopes that the spectators do not see “before we forget” only as an autobiographical effort. However, his will to self -reflect is refreshingly identifiable and gives the film an intimate charm that many of its main predecessors lack.

“I love people, I love human relations and I also love clashes of culture and personalities,” said Di Pace.

“This idea of falling in love for the first time in an international school and having a traumatic experience around it, and having a record of it in VHS felt like the perfect storm, or, you could say, the perfect mosaic to build a film,” said Di Pace.

Although Madrussan and Morgan deliver nuanced performances, the climax of “Before We Forget” is a chilling monologue delivered by Argentine actor Araceli González who, like Matias Roma’s mother, reassures his son who accepts him as his true being without using words as “gay” or “queer.”

“If that scene didn’t work, the whole movie would not work,” said Di Pace. “It’s something that happened to my parents, and I decided to replicate what I heard, word for word. I am very proud of it.”

Although Di Pace has not turned his back on the performance, he is eager to concentrate largely on writing and directing forward. He is currently working on two scripts that, according to him, are “completely different” of “before let’s forget”, including at least one that covers issues of “magical realism.”

“I love people, I love human relations and I also love clashes of culture and personalities,” he said.

As for the aspects of LGBTQ+ Life that you would like to show on the screen, he added: “I love movies that have a very strong queer element and, nevertheless, it is something else. People are so present, so moved, so hungry for this type of stories. I would like the lines to become unfolded and not be a Niche thing.”
