With the emergence of the use of social networks in children, many people, especially parents, are concerned about their online safety.

The concern is not unjustified, since it is no secret that thousands (maybe even millions) of predators stalk on these platforms. Fortunately, Meta has launched several new features aimed at protecting adolescents on their two largest platforms: Facebook and Instagram.

The Meta initiative aims to create a safer online environment in two ways. The first way to which it is aimed at accounts that show predatory behavior, and the second facilitates adolescents to detect and report suspicious activities.

Teenagers will now be safer in the goal platforms

The latest goal update has improved direct messaging protections on its platforms. Specifically, teenagers will now obtain security tips to verify who is sending them messages. For example, a large red flag is when a child is contacted on social networks on a recently created account (a tactic used to hide identities, omitting restrictions and scams). To help teenagers immediately to detect this, Meta will show them the date on which the account was created.

In addition, the platform will facilitate adolescents to block and inform accounts. They can reduce all communication and notify the goal of inappropriate behavior with a single click. This will give these children the power to quickly protect themselves and the others when they do not feel safe.

In addition, goal is testing new tools with AI to detect when users can misrepresent their age. If the system marks an account how it is likely to belong to a teenager, it will automatically change that user to an account for teenagers to apply appropriate security restrictions. This proactive use of the help to ensure that minors receive protections even if they try to avoid age limits.

Meta has also made algorithm changes behind the scene to reduce the visibility of the content that can attract predators. For example, Instagram will stop recommending accounts centered on children and administered to adults to adults who have shown suspicious behavior. This movement is designed to limit the exploitation discovery before any direct interaction can occur.

Goal has eliminated thousands of predatory accounts

In a transparent movement, Meta revealed that he had eliminated more than 600,000 accounts for predator behavior on Instagram and Facebook. That is a surprisingly high number and only shows how many children were at risk.

What is more? Goal caught about 135,000 of them sexualizing children with their hands in the dough. They left comments or requested images that exploit them sexually in other accounts operated in adults. The elimination of these accounts shows that Meta is ready to take an active position against these threats before someone becomes a victim.

Kurt’s Key Takeways

Protecting adolescents online is a high priority, and it is great that Meta is showing a growing commitment to this. Preventing the exploitation and abuse of children is something that all platforms must be proactive. These updates and account elimination are only the initial steps to create a space where children feel safe. It is important to recognize that there will always be risks on these platforms, but giving adolescents to defend themselves is extremely welcome.
