Flaco Jiménez, Texas accordionist who expanded the popularity of joint and Texan music, dies at 86
Houston (AP) -Flaco Jiménez, the legendary accordionist of San Antonio who won multiple Grammys and helped expand the popularity of the music, Texan and Tex-Mex, died Thursday. He was 86 years old.
Jiménez’s death was announced on Thursday night by his family on social networks. He was surrounded by family members when he died in the house of San Antonio of his son Arturo Jiménez.
“Dad was at peace when he left. He began to say goodbye several days before. He said he was proud of himself for what he had done and that he leaves memories for the public to enjoy. He said he was ready to leave,” Arturo Jiménez told The News in a telephone interview on Friday.
Arturo Jiménez said that a cause of death has not yet been determined. His father had been hospitalized in January after having a blood clot in his leg. Then, doctors discovered that he had some vascular problems.
Born Leonardo Jiménez in 1939, he was known for his fans for his nickname of Flaco, which means skinny in Spanish.
He was the son of the Santiago Jiménez Consone pioneer. Enjuno is a musical genre that originated in southern Texas and combines different cultural genres and influences.

Jiménez refined his joint musical skills playing in the halls of San Antonio and dance halls. Throughout his career, Jiménez added other influences to the music of Conjunos, even of country, rock and jazz.

In the 1990s, Jiménez was part of the Texas Técas Tiernos Supergroup, which included Sahm, Augie Meyers and Freddy Fender. The group won a Grammy in 1991 for the song, “I’m from San Luis.”
Jiménez also won another Grammy in 1999 as part of another supergroup, the Super Seven.
Jiménez won five Grammys and received a Lifetime Grammy Achievement Award in 2015.
It was also included in the National Hispanic Hall and the Hall of Fame of International Latin Music in New York and was appointed state musician in Texas in 2014.
Arturo Jiménez said his father was a humble man who never wanted to be a showman and focused on playing music for his fans.
“I have seen where fans approach and literally cry and thank my father for all good music and how Dad’s music has been there for them in multiple situations, whether happiness or sadness,” said Arturo Jiménez.

When Jiménez was appointed beneficiary of the 2022 National Arts Medal, the White House said it was being honored to “take advantage of the inheritance to enrich US music” and that by “mixing northern, Tex Mex and Texan Music With the Blues, Rock N ‘Roll and Pop Music, he covers the soul of the southwest of the United States.”
“We appreciate the gift of his musical talent, which brought joy to innumerable fans. Your death leaves a void in our hearts,” said the Museum and the Museum of the Texas Music Hall in a publication on social networks.
Kyle Young, CEO of the Hall of Fame and the Museum of Country in Nashville, Tennessee, said Jiménez “was a model of team of Texan Joint” that “attracted millions of listeners to a rich musical world that could not have discovered on their own.”
Jiménez lived all his life in San Antonio, a city that was “very close to his heart,” said his son.

“They call him ‘Eljo de San Antonio’ and my father was always proud of that,” said Arturo Jiménez, citing a Spanish phrase that means the son of San Antonio.
His family plans to have a private funeral followed by a celebration of his life with the public.
