Ai Humanoid Robot learns to imitate human emotions and behavior

Ai Humanoid Robot learns to imitate human emotions and behavior

Ready for a robot that not only looks human, but also acts and reacts as one, expressing emotions such as shyness, emotion or friendship? Disney Research, the innovation power behind the Walt Disney company, has become a reality.

His latest creation is an autonomous humanoid robot that can imitate emotions and human behaviors in real time. Think about it as a real life wall, but with even more personality.

This innovative robot uses advanced artificial intelligence to replicate natural gestures and deliberate actions with surprising precision. What makes it really special is how he learns by observing and imitating human operators who guide their emotional responses during interactions.

Over time, the robot becomes able to commit to people alone, causing each interaction to feel personal and realistic.

How does it work? Robot training to feel

The secret sauce behind this emotional robot lies in its training process. Initially, a human operator remotely controlled the robot, using instincts and social intuition to guide their behavior. For example, if someone approached the robot timidly, the operator would respond in kind, teaching the robot how to reflect that emotion. These interactions were registered and fed in an AI system that analyzed each movement and response.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

Disney Research explains it better: “Our model learns to predict continuous operators commands through a dissemination process and discreet commands through a classifier.”

In simpler terms, AI learns two things, soft movements (such as waving) and specific actions (as saying hello). After extensive training in simulations, the robot was tested with real people, and nailed it. Users could even recognize different “moods” generated by the Robot AI.

Newton’s role: a next -generation physics engine

Behind this innovation is Newton, an open source physics engine developed by Disney Research in collaboration with Nvidia and Google Deepmind. Newton is designed to close the “Sim a Real” gap in robotics creating ultra -vealistic virtual environments where robots can be trained efficiently. This means that robots can practice complex tasks, such as interacting with soft objects or navigating difficult land, before entering the real world.

Newton’s abilities are impressive:

  • Differentiable Physics: It allows robots to optimize their movements simulating how actions in real world scenarios will be developed.
  • Extensibility: Robots can interact with various objects such as food or fabric, which makes them perfect for entertainment purposes.
  • GPU acceleration: With NVIDIA WARP technology, simulations extend up to 100 times faster than traditional methods.

Disney plans to use Newton to improve its robotic characters platform, which includes expressive droids such as BDX models inspired by Star Wars that are exhibited at the Keynote GTC in NVIDIA this year.

Disney vision: robots that tell stories

For Disney, these humanoid robots are more than only technological advances. They are narrators. Kyle Laughlin, Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development, shared his emotion for what follows.

“This collaboration will allow us to create a new generation of robotic characters that are more expressive and attractive than ever, and connect with our guests so that only Disney can,” he said.

BDX droids are just the beginning. Disney imagines a future in which robots are not only tools, but partners who make you laugh, cry and feel connected, just like your favorite Disney characters.
