AI technology helps gather lost dogs with their owners
When Michael Bown left New York City for a family reunion on the coast of Jersey, he never imagined that he would return to a nightmare.
His beloved adoptive dog, Millie, only one year old, left his neck during a walk in the East Village and disappeared at night.
What followed was a frantic, emotional and, ultimately moving trip, one that highlights the power of the community, technology and a little luck.

A missing dog: the beginning of a frantic search
Michael’s story began with a simple act of trust, leaving Millie in the care of a close friend. But as Michael remembers, “He scared a little on the walk with him and left his neck. This was in the East Village in New York, and she took off. I think she was trying to find me or discover where I was.”
His friend persecuted Millie by blocks, desperately trying to catch up, even trying to mark cyclists and passersby. But Millie, a quick and determined bull pit mixture, had gone.
“He called me on the phone and it was simply, you know, more or less, panting and crazy saying, like, ‘hey. I’m sorry, but, you know, this is what happened. I can’t find it.”
Michael immediately turned around, driving back to New York. He and his family registered the city until 2 in the morning, visiting police stations and firefighters and publishing in Facebook groups and lost pets.
“It was like looking for a needle in a haystack, especially in New York,” he said.

Rescue technology
The next morning, Michael’s mother uploaded Millie’s photo and microchip information to Petco Love losta free and innovative platform that uses the coincidence of photos with AI to gather lost pets with their families. In a matter of minutes, Michael received two alerts, one with an image image and another with a microchip coincidence. Both pointed to an emergency veterinary clinic in Paramus, New Jersey.
“It was fantastic. I had never heard of something like that technology. It couldn’t have worked better,” Michael shared. “From the moment he disappeared when I could find her, I think they were just thirteen, fourteen hours. So, yes, I mean, less than a full day since it happened, or from her, you know, leaving the belt, for me meeting with her.”

Millie’s wild trip
Millie’s adventure was as heartbreaking as miraculous. After running almost ten miles from the East Village to Harlem, it was hit by a car. A good Samaritan stopped traffic, picked it up and took it to an emergency veterinarian in New Jersey.
The staff treated her for scratches, cuts and a leg injury and uploaded her photo and information from microchip to Petco Love Lost, where the AI of the system coincided with Michael’s report.
“The technology was excellent. All we had to do was upload a photo of her, and then we could match her through that image and, something like the technology to be paired, with the veterinary group also uploading an image of it. So, yes, I mean, it is a crazy technology these days and how fast, you know, people can meet their pets, “Michael said.

How Petco Love Lost works
Aaron Klein, Product Director of Petco Love Lost, explained the magic behind the platform.
“Petco Love Lost uses photo coincidence technology to scan instantaneously and compare a photo of a lost or found mascot against our centralized pet database,” Klein said. “This includes photos of most animal shelters in North America, as well as platforms such as Nextdoor neighbors by ring and direct publications of community members. Which used to take hours, looking for shebsites of shelters manually, moving through social networks and gathering information, is now carried out in less than a minute.
“The Petco Love Lost system automatically coincides with pets depending on up to 512 data points, and as soon as it informs its pet, we continue to monitor all the incoming pets,” Klein added. “If we find a possible coincidence, you will receive a new coincidence alert through the text message and an email immediately, so leadership is never lost. This automated real -time approach makes meetings faster, more precise and less stressful for pet parents.”

The challenge of lost pets
Gathering lost pets with their families is a great challenge, especially in a city as extensive as New York. According to Klein, “the most difficult part of gathering lost pets is double: first, losing all pet data in a central place, and second, get everyone to have lost or found a pet, that they really look in that place.”

With only 22% of pet parents go to a shelter when a pet is lost, but 80% look online (often on a single platform), there are large gaps in the search process. Petco Love Lost is addressing this by connecting data sources on a search platform, including more than 3,000 shelters and the main social networks, with plans to expand even more.

An emotional meeting
When Michael finally saw Millie in the veterinarian, it was a moment of pure relief and joy.
“It was a very emotional meeting for me,” he said. “I mean, I think that good, as, as we met so fast. But all night, as, in the night I was missing, and I was not very sure where I was definitely, as one of the most difficult nights I’ve had for a while … there was definitely there. [tears]. I was, you know, crying as a baby not to admit it. But yes, it was very emotional. ”
