Another red state is responding to Trump
Jefferson City, MO (AP) – Republican governor Mike Kehoe said Friday that he is calling Missouri legislators to a special session to re -draw the districts of the State Representatives Chamber as part of a growing national battle between Republicans and Democrats looking for an advantage in the Congress elections next year.
Kehoe made the announcement only a few hours after the governor of the Texas Republican Party, Greg Abbott, signed a new voting map of the congress designed to help Republicans win five more seats in the medium -term elections of 2026. He marked a victory for President Donald Trump, who has been urging the states led by Republicans to remod Better opportunity to retain camera control.
Missouri is the third state to seek a redistribution of unusual districts of half of the decade for partisan advantage. Texas, led by the Republicans, assumed the first task, but was quickly counteracted by California led by Democrat, where Governor Gavin Newsom is asking voters to approve a map aimed at giving his party five more seats.
Kehoe scheduled Missouri’s special session to start on September 3. He launched a new proposed map that is directed to the district of Kansas City-District of the Democratic representative of Emanuel Cleaver by stretching east in rural areas of republican inclination.
Its agenda also includes another republican priority: a proposed constitutional amendment that would make the approval of the voting measures initiated by citizens, such as abortion rights and amendments to legalize marijuana adopted in recent years difficult.
Kehoe threw both elements as a defense against politicians and liberal activists.
“The conservative values of common sense of Missouri should be really represented at all levels of the government,” he said in a statement.

The Democrats rushed to express their outrage. The minority leader of the Missouri representatives, Ashley Aune, called Kehoe a “Trump puppet” that tries to “steal a seat in Congress for Republicans” and gartain the voting initiative process.
“It marks the worst threat to the integrity of our state government since the legislators in favor of slavery voted for Missouri to join the Confederation in 1861,” said Aune in a statement.
Missouri is represented in the United States Chamber by six Republicans and two Democrats: Cleaver and representative Wesley Bell in St. Louis.
Cleaver described the redistribution of districts proposed an attack against democracy perpetrated by Trump.
“This attempt by Gerrymander Missouri will not simply change the lines of the district, but will silence the voices. He will deny the representation,” Cleaver said in a statement while promising not to grant the seat.
The unprecedented step to draw Missouri’s maps again in the mid -decade and without an updated census is not an act of democracy: it is an unconstitutional attack against him.

Missouri Democrats have little capacity to prevent Republican legislators from promulgating a new map. Unlike Texas, where the Democrats left the state for two weeks to delay a vote, the absence of Missouri Democrats would not avoid a quorum for business. And although the Democrats could be filibust in the Senate, the Republicans could use procedural maneuvers to close that, as they did earlier this year to approve a constitutional amendment proposed that restricts abortion.
Republicans won a majority of 220-215 Democrats about Democrats in 2024, a result that aligned almost perfectly with the participation of the vote won by the two games in districts of the United States, according to a recent analysis of News. Although the general result was close to Neutral, the analysis of the AP shows that Democrats and Republicans benefited from advantages in particular states derived from the way in which the districts were extracted.
Democrats would need to obtain three seats in next year’s elections to take control of the camera. The starting party tends to lose seats in the middle of the period elections, as was the case of Trump in 2018, when the Democrats won the camera control and subsequently launched Trump investigations. Seeking to avoid a similar situation in his second term, Trump has urged states led by Republicans to strengthen their seats in Congress.
In Texas, Republicans already have 25 of the 38 seats of Congress.
“Texas is now reder in the United States Congress,” Abbott said in a video he published in X by signing the legislation.
Newsom, who has become a Trump’s main adversary in the redistribution of districts and other issues, mockingly labeled Abbott in X as the “Lapdog#1” of the president after the firm. Democrats already have 43 of the 52 seats of the California Congress.
Voting rights groups filed a lawsuit this week before the Abbott’s signature, saying that the new map weakens the electoral influence of black voters. Texas Democrats have also promised to question the new map in court.

Some Republicans of Missouri had pressed a map that could give them an advantage of 7-1 to draw districts after the 2020 census. But the legislative majority of the Republican party finally opted for him. Some feared that the most aggressive plan could be susceptible to a legal challenge and could be counterproductive in an evil electoral year for Republicans creating more competitive districts that could allow Democrats to win three seats.
Republican officials in Florida, Indiana and other places are also considering reviewing their districts of the House of Representatives, as well as Democratic officials in Illinois, Maryland and New York.
In Utah, a judge recently ordered the legislature led by the Republicans to draw new districts of the Congress after finding that legislators had weakened and ignored an independent commission established by voters to avoid the partisan gerrymandering. Republicans have won the four seats in the Utah Congress on the map approved by legislators in 2021.
