A woman was critical on Wednesday after a bear attack in a wooded area outside the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, police said.
Tuesday’s attack occurred on the edge of the forest in Skofljica, about 6 miles southeast of the capital, while the woman walked to her dog, police said.
The bear withdrew to the forest after the attack and the police has advised local residents to remain away and cautious.
“There are several hunters in the field at the same time, who are responsible for detering the bears of the points where contact with humans could happen,” said the police. “If it is necessary to increase the number of hunters in the field, we will.”
The incident occurred a few days after the authorities approved the sacrifice of 206 brown bears, whose population in the area has grown to around 1,000 bears.
The small alpine nation of just over 2 million people are widely forests with many protected areas. The authorities occasionally approve the sacrifices of Oso or Wolf despite the strong opposition of animal rights groups.
