A Brazilian tourist who fell through a ravine in a popular Indonesian volcano among hikers has been found dead, the Brazilian government and the Indonesian rescue agency said Tuesday, after a search and rescue effort of one day.

The attempts to evacuate Juliana Marins, 26, who disappeared on Saturday at Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, were hindered by the challenging climate and the land after the authorities saw their still body with a drone.

“The Brazilian government reports, with a deep sadness, the death of Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, who had fallen from a cliff surrounding the path near the crater of Mount Rinjani,” said the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

“At the end of the four days of work, hindered by the adverse conditions of climate, land and visibility in the region, the teams of the National Search and Rescue Agency of Indonesia found the body of the Brazilian tourist.”

The head of the National Search and Rescue Agency of Indonesia, Mohammad Syafii, said rescuers found her insensitive and evacuate her body on Wednesday morning due to bad weather.

“One of the rescuers managed to reach the victim at a depth of 600 meters, verifying that there were no signs of life,” he told reporters. “Three rescuers approached the victim and confirmed that she died.”

An Instagram account that provides updates from the Marins family throughout the search effort also said that Marins did not respond on Tuesday.

“Today, the rescue team managed to get to the place where Juliana Marins was. With great sadness, we informed him that he did not survive,” the account, which accumulated more than 1.5 million followers since Marins disappeared, wrote in a publication on Tuesday.

“We are still very grateful for all the sentences, messages of affection and support we have received.”

The authorities said previously that Marins fell and had seen her, but she was not moving.

The authorities told the Reuters news agency that Marins had a depth of approximately 500 feet when it was first located, but had passed to more than 1,600 feet on Monday.

The authorities said the rescuers on Saturday heard Marins’ shouts to get help and at that time, BBC News, a partner of News themezone, reported.

Marins’s latest publications on Instagram show their backpack around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia.

Lombok Island is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and exuberant vegetation, and many try to climb Rinjani, the second most high volcano in Indonesia, for its panoramic views.

In 2018, hundreds of hikers and guides were stranded by landslides in the mountain after a magnitude of 6.4 The earthquake hit the island. At least 17 were killed on the island, including one in the mountain.
