The first case of a human screw worm infection has been detected in Maryland.
Andrew Nixon, spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, confirmed to News Digital that the patient had recently returned from a trip to El Salvador, a country affected by a screw worm outbreak.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) worked together with the Maryland Department of Health to investigate the case.

The CDC confirmed the diagnosis on August 4 after the experts reviewed the larvae images.
“The risk to public health in the United States from this introduction is very low,” said Nixon.

The new screw world, also known as miiasis, is a parasitic infestation of fly larvae that feeds on living meat, according to CDC.
A person can contract myiasis when females drop their eggs on or near the injury, nose or ears of a person.

It can also be transferred through ticks and mosquitoes after the fly joins its eggs to insects, according to the previous source.
In the case of an infection, a lump in the person’s fabrics will be developed as the larvae grow and eat meat. It can be fatal if it is not treated at an early stage, they warn health experts.

“Miiasis is not common in the United States,” says CDC on its website. “Most people diagnosed with miiasis in the US.

Reuters reported last week that the CDCs had confirmed a case of New World World Worm in Maryland of a person who traveled from Guatemala.
The discrepancy in the reports on the origin of the case has not been confirmed.
