Thousands of police officers are being deployed to maintain order, and will use similar tactics as they did on Saturday night, said Paris Chief Laurent Núñez, to journalists. AP reporters saw tear gas used near the stadium and water cannons used near the triumph arc to disperse noisy crowds.
In addition to the injuries and arrests, Núñez said that four stores were looted during the night. Firefighters were so busy extinguishing garbage fires in the middle of the celebrations and dealing with other emergencies that the direct fire line was saturated.
At 2 in the morning on Sunday, a total of 294 arrests had been made, including 30 people who broke into a shoe store in the fields-Elysées. Two cars lit near Princes, the police added.
In the place of the Bastille, there were cheerful scenes while the fans climbed to the base of the famous column, singing, dancing and leaving flares, while those around were joined.
At one time, the motorcycles accelerated their engines aloud and the crowd chewed while they did it in the column. There was no police near and, at 1 in the morning, the atmosphere was optimistic without tensions and much singing.
Núñez blamed the dispersed problems to “thousands of people who committed acts of violence” instead of seeing the game. He observed similar disturbances outside the previous celebrations in the capital, as after the victory of the French World Cup in 2018.
