Cher makes a big mistake when presenting the recording of the year at the Grammys
Cher capped a mishap-filled Grammy sequence with a bang Sunday when she appeared to mistakenly declare that the late R&B great Luther Vandross had won the Grammy for Record of the Year.
Cher, one of several winners of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award, took the stage to applause and began thanking the crowd before being awkwardly interrupted by host Trevor Noah, who presented her trophy.
As Noah held the trophy and walked away, Cher gave an apparent thank-you speech, concluded her remarks and then attempted to exit the stage before the host pulled her back.
“Can we have him announce the nominees?” Noah asked Cher as she returned to the microphone.
“You can see I wanted to get off stage,” Cher joked.
After clips of the nominated albums played on the News broadcast, Cher appeared on screen again holding an envelope from the winner, only to struggle with the teleprompter in front of her.
“And the Grammy goes to… Oh! They told me I was going to be on the prompter,” Cher said before making a closed-lipped motion.
He opened the envelope and made a big mistake.
“Oh! The Grammy goes to Luther Gran-dross,” Cher said, fumbling for the name of the R&B legend whose 1982 song with Cheryl Lynn, “If This World Were Mine,” inspired Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s winning album, “Luther.”

Cher quickly corrected herself as the Grammy winners took the stage, where they paid tribute to Vandross.
“This is what music is all about. Luther Vandross,” Lamar began as he turned to Cher and his fellow collaborators for a laugh onstage.
Moments later, Noah brushed off the confusion.
“I love live television,” he said.
