About the attack

Kaspersky’s cybersecurity researchers recently discovered a sophisticated cyber spying campaign that exploits a previously unknown vulnerability in Google Chrome. The attack was activated when the victims, without knowing it, clicks on a Phishing link in an email, throwing a malicious place in their browser. Surprisingly, no more measures were required. Simply opening the link was enough to infect the system.

According Kaspersky reportthe malware was based on a zero day vulnerability, then it was identified as CVE-2025-2783. The researchers say they analyzed the exploit, reverse engineering their logic and discovered that it allowed the attackers to avoid the safety characteristics of Chrome as if they did not exist.

Vulnerability exploded the communication frame between Chrome processes, known as Mojo, which is crucial for browser functionality. This allowed the attackers to execute malicious code in different processes within Chrome, without overlooking their security measures.

“We have discovered and informed dozens of zero day exploits used in attacks, but this exploit is undoubtedly one of the most interesting we have found,” Kaspersky said.

The cybersecurity team also highlighted the stealthy nature of the attack, which was mainly addressed to media professionals, educational institutions and government agencies. Nicknamed “Operation Forumtroll”, the campaign seemed to have espionage as its main objective.

Google’s response to attack

Once Kaspersky reported vulnerability, Google launched an emergency solution. The company has updated Chrome’s stable channel for Windows, and the update is gradually implemented to users in the next few days and weeks. Meanwhile, the stable channel has also been updated.

As with most safety updates, Google maintains the details in wrapping until most users have installed the solution. This is a standard precaution to prevent other computer pirates from exploiting the defect, while some users are not yet protected. If the error also affects third -party software, Google will continue to restrict the details until these platforms publish their own patches.
