Cole Escola’s first shot on Broadway has earned them one of the most coveted awards in the world of theater.

In the Tony Awards on Sunday night, the star of “Oh, Mary!” He scored the Tony for the best performance of an actor in a main role in a play for his delicious representation of the first lady of the civil era Mary Todd Lincoln.

Escola accepted the prize in a dress inspired by an appearance used by Broadway’s legend, Bernadette Peters, led to the 1999 ceremony. In their speech, a couple of Grindr shaped blatantly, as well as the actor-comediana Amy Sedaris, who “always reminds me of how important it is for me, and she is.”

“Oh, Mary!”, A work of a Campy revisionist act in the days prior to the murder of President Abraham Lincoln, paints the First Lady as a petulant ruffle that tries to drink his problems. She longs to get out of the White House to become a cabaret star.

Last month, Escola, who was not only the leader of “Oh, Mary!” But he also wrote the silver silverness, he told NPR how they were related to the first lady and her conventional ambitions.

“This work is a woman with a dream that nobody around her understands. A dream that everyone tells her that she is stupid and makes no sense. And I feel that way.”

Escola also told NPR how they began to imagine the concept more than a decade during their first days in the New York Cabaret and Alt Comedy scenes.

“I had the idea: what would happen if the murder of Abraham Lincoln was not so bad for Mary Todd?” They remembered. “And it was just an idea that tickles me so much.”

“Oh, Mary!” He officially became life when he debuted outside Broadway in January 2024. After Rave Reviews extended his career several times, the show reached the main resistance of the theater world in Manhattan that June.

Escola took a break to play Mary Todd in January, delivering the role to Betty Gilpin (“Glow”) and Tituss Burges.

The actor of the “difficult people” returned to the first lady’s shoes for a brief career in early April before passing the torch to Burges for a limited commitment of six weeks, which will begin on June 23.

With his victory, Escola becomes the first openly non -binary artist to obtain a Tony prize in his category, and for a role that they themselves left.

In 2022, the British composer Toby Marlow and producer JJ Maley became the first non -binary people to obtain Tony awards.

Marlow won for his work in the musical “Six”, while Maley was one of the producers of “A Strange Loop”, the winner of 2023 for the best musical.
