Diane Keaton’s family revealed the cause of her death in a statement shared with People magazine on Wednesday, less than a week after the Oscar-winning actress’ death.

“The Keaton family is so grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement read.

Her family added that Keaton “loved her animals and was steadfast in her support of the homeless community, so any donation in her memory to a local food bank or animal shelter would be a wonderful and greatly appreciated tribute to her.”

The legendary actress, best known for her roles in “Annie Hall,” the Woody Allen film that won her the Best Actress Oscar in 1978, and “The Godfather,” died in California on Saturday, a family spokesperson told People at the time. She was 79 years old.

His death caused great emotion in the world of acting.

Jane Fonda, Keaton’s co-star in the 2018 film “Book Club,” said the news was “hard to believe… or accept.”

“She was always a spark of life and light, constantly laughing at her own weaknesses, being limitlessly creative… in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her worldview,” Fonda wrote on social media. “She was one of a kind. And, although she didn’t know it or admit it, she was an excellent actress!”

In a lengthy Instagram post, filmmaker Nancy Meyers, who worked with Keaton on “Baby Boom,” “Father of the Bride” and “Something’s Gotta Give,” which won her a Golden Globe in 2004, wrote that “we have lost a giant.”

“As a woman, I lost a friend of almost 40 years; at times during those years, she felt like a sister because we shared so many truly memorable experiences. As a filmmaker, I lost a connection with an actress one can only dream of,” she continued.

Reese Witherspoon called Keaton “one of my first mentors in this business.”

“She’s just…a truly original person,” Witherspoon continued. “So, for Diane, watch one of her movies and dress up in a really cool, interesting outfit, in black and white, take a cool photo, and just live your dream. Just be yourself, unique and interesting. I think Diane would be very happy.”

Keaton never married and was frank about not wanting to date. He is survived by his two sons, Dexter and Duke.
