The Oscar-winning “Monster” star stepped out before the lighting of the Olympic cauldron to call for harmony as the United Nations Messenger of Peace.

“Athletes, spectators from all corners of the world, this is a message of peace from my beloved compatriot Nelson Mandela,” said the South African-born actor. “Peace is not just the absence of conflict. Peace is the creation of an environment where everyone can thrive, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, class, caste or any other social marker of difference.”

“Today, this message seems more relevant than ever,” he continued with a rueful laugh. “Let these Games be more than just sport. Let them be a reminder of our common humanity, our mutual respect and a resounding call for peace everywhere.”

Theron, who has parlayed her film career into humanitarian efforts such as Africa Outreach, was left breathless at the end.

The “The Italian Job” actor spent a year in Milan as a teenage model. He made a deep return on Friday.
