First World Cup first of the heart of continuous beating
For the first time, surgeons from the National Hospital of the University of Taiwan (NTUH) successfully conducted a heart transplant in which the donor organ never stopped beating. This revolutionary procedure eliminates the traditional pause in blood flow, known as ischemic time, drastically reducing damage to heart muscle and improving the possibilities of a successful transplant.
By keeping the heart continuously pumping oxygenated blood throughout the process, NTUH has established a new reference point in cardiac surgery that promises better results for patients worldwide.

Why omit the ischemic time is a big problem
Traditional heart transplants depend on cold storage, which stops blood flow to the organ. Even a few hours without oxygen can damage the heart muscle, increasing the risks of rejection or complications after surgery. Ntuh’s method? A personalized organ care system that acts as a portable life support machine, which offers oxygenated blood to the heart from the donor to the recipient; No pauses, without cold storage.

How it works: The technology ‘Never Skip-A-Beat’
Inspired by ECMO’s life support, the NTUH organ care system keeps the heart that pumps outside the body using a pump system, oxygenners and deposits. During the first surgery, the team transported a donor heart among the operating rooms while still beating, connected to this device. The receiver, a 49 -year -old woman with dilated cardiomyopathy, recovered gently and showed remarkably low cardiac enzyme levels, which is a key indicator of heart muscle health.

Stanford’s attempt against NTUH’s advance
While Stanford University was a pioneer in “beat” transplants in 2023, its method still included brief ischemic periods (10-30 minutes) during organ transfer. The zero ischemic approach of NTUH? The heart never stopped, even for a second.
“The hearts still beat before the acquisition, continued hitting after the acquisition and never stopped,” said Chen Yih-Shurng, head of the NTUH organ transplant team.

What follows? More hearts, less risks
With two successful transplants under your credit, NTUH aims to refine the organ care system and expand access. Its innovative findings, published in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Techniquescould redefine global transplant protocols. As the demand for donor hearts exceeds the supply, this innovation offers hope for shorter waiting lists and healthier recoveries.

Kurt’s Key Takeways
Ntuh’s milestone is not just about technical skill, but it is about saving lives. When cutting the ischemic time, they have become “impossible” in “I am possible.” For patients waiting for transplants, this advance means hearts of stronger donors, less complications and a brighter shot in a second chance. As the team says, zero ischemic time is equal to zero unnecessary risks.
