Flying drones target retail theft
NEWNow you can listen to News articles!
Shoplifting has long been a challenge for retailers, but a US company now believes flying drones could help combat the problem. Flock Safety, best known for its law enforcement camera systems, is promoting its new Flock Aerodome Drone as an automated security system for the private sector. The idea is simple: if a robbery occurs, a drone is launched, follows the suspect and transmits live video to security teams or even the police. With theft rates reportedly set to increase 93% by 2024, the push for high-tech security has never been stronger.

How drones would work
Instead of sending a guard, Flock’s drones could be launched seconds after motion is detected. Equipped with thermal and high-definition cameras, the drones can zoom, track suspects and transmit images in real time.
The company says that the system:
- Covers up to 38 square miles with a single dock
- Integrates with existing security alarms and camera systems
- Operates with FAA safety approvals and built-in geofencing
- Reduces costs by replacing the need for multiple guards.
In theory, drones act as a “guard in the sky”, providing retailers with quick coverage of large areas, such as shopping malls, warehouses or ports.

Why retailers may be interested
Organized crime in retail is a growing problem. Retailers have reported higher losses, tighter budgets and fewer available staff. Flock Safety maintains that its drone system can act as a deterrent simply by being visible, making criminals think twice before attacking a store. Beyond retail, the company is also rolling out its drones to operators of hospitals, warehouses and energy facilities that require large-scale surveillance.

Due to the useful technologies of drones, retailers will soon be able to rely on them as a visible deterrent against organized theft. (Security of the flock)

What does this mean to you?
For shoppers, this could mean visiting stores where drones are part of the security picture. You may notice them in shopping malls or parking lots, keeping an eye out for unusual activity. While some may see this as an additional security measure, others may worry about increased surveillance and loss of privacy. For retailers, drones could help protect profits, staff and customers without the rising costs of hiring additional guards. But whether customers welcome the drone of drones remains to be seen.
