The governor of California, Gavin Newsom (D), warned in a stellar speech on Tuesday in the midst of President Donald Trump’s military response to Los Angeles’s protests that this “assault” to democracy will be extended throughout the country if Trump continues without control.

“Look, it’s not just about protests here in Los Angeles,” he said. “When Donald Trump sought a general authority to command the National Guard, he made that order apply to all states. This is all of us. California can be the first, but it will clearly not end here.”

He continued: “Other states are the following. Democracy is next.”

Newsom’s televised speech came the fifth day of protests against federal immigration raids in Los Angeles.

Trump has activated more than 4,000 members of the National Guard and 700 US Marines, who were originally deployed to protect federal buildings of possible damage or destruction.

He has done so for the objections of the city’s leaders and the State, including the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass (D), who told Los Angeles Times on Sunday that “he tried to talk to the administration” to keep the troops out, since the protests during the weekend “were relatively minor.”

“Trump is pulling a military drag network throughout Los Angeles,” said Newsom in his direction. “Beyond their declared intention to go after violent and serious criminals, their agents are arresting dishwasher, gardeners, day and seamstress workers.”

The governor condemned Trump as “a president who wants to be obliged by any law or constitution,” warning viewers that the United States legal norms and traditions run the risk of permanently dismantling themselves, and that “this moment we have feared has come.”

Newsom demanded the Administration on Monday, accusing Trump of “unprecedented usurpation of state authority and resources” when taking care of the State’s National Guard troops, and requested an emergency order on Tuesday to block the “illegal militarization of Los Angeles.”

The American District Judge Charles Breyer scheduled a hearing on the order for Thursday.

“Authoritarian regimes begin by attacking people who can defend themselves,” said Newsom on Tuesday. “But they do not stop there. Trump and their loyal ones, thrive in the division, because it allows them to take more power and exercise even more control.”

Newsom further criticized Trump in his speech to order the military “to present a vulgar exhibition to celebrate his birthday” with a parade this Saturday, which is intended to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Army. UU., And compared his decision with those of “other failed dictators.”
