Gleason score for prostate cancer: What to know about the diagnosis of Biden
Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer.
The Biden team shared a statement on Sunday that the former president was experiencing “increasing urinary symptoms” before his diagnosis, which was characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (grade 5 group) with “metastases to the bone.”
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, cancer seems to be sensitive to hormones, which allows effective management. The president and his family are reviewing the treatment options with their doctors,” the statement said.

The Biden classification of 9 on the Gleason scale, a qualification system for the severity of prostate cancer, has caused concerns, since it correlates with high -grade cancer.

Dr. Arpeet Shah, an associated urological urologist in Illinois, explained in an interview with News Digital how the classification system indicates the aggressiveness of the disease.
“It is based on how cancer cells are seen under a microscope, specifically, how different they look at normal prostate cells,” he said. (Shah was not involved in Biden care).

Pathologists allocate two numbers from 1 to 5, based on the most common and most common patterns present in the tissue.
The lower the degree, the more normal the cancer cells are seen, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The descriptions of the qualifications are listed below.
Grade 1 – Cancer cells look like normal cells.
Degrees 2 to 4 – Cancer cells in the tissue are less similar to normal cells.
Grade 5 – Cancer cells look very abnormal.

The largest cancer areas are described and then add up to determine a Gleason score, which usually varies from 6 to 10.
“The higher the score, the more aggressive cancer is,” Shah said.

Below is a breakdown of the Gleason score ranges.
6: 6: Cancer is low grade and slow growth.
Gleason score of 7: Cancer is intermediate and it is more likely to grow or spread over time.
Gleason score from 8 to 10: Cancer is high grade and may need a more aggressive treatment.
The system is “one of the key tools” that experts use to “help guide treatment decisions and have significant conversations with patients about their options,” said Shah.

“It is important to highlight the importance of ‘early’ here,” he said. “If President Biden underwent a regular detection of prostate cancer with a PSA blood analysis and a digital rectal exam, his diagnosis could have been detected before.”
In an appearance in “The Big Weeking Show” on Sunday, News medical taxpayer and the radiologist certified by the Board, Dr. Nicole Saphier, said that, as well as breast cancer, prostate cancer comes in different ways and can be “very different” in a very different way.
Saphier confirmed that Biden metastasis cancer is stage 4, which “significantly” decreases the possibilities of survival.
“There are no two cases exactly the same,” he said. “But the good thing they mentioned about the case of President Biden is that it is sensitive to hormones.”
“We have so many treatments these days that you can actually live for a long time with the cancers of stage 4”.
This form can be treatable through surgery or medications that will stop the production of testosterone that feeds cancer growth.
“[Stage 4] It is the worst case when you talk about cancer, but we have so many treatments these days that you can actually live for quite some time with the cancers of stage 4, “said Saphier.

“In his case, because it is sensitive to hormones, there are treatment methods,” he continued.
“He will never cure him. He will never have stage in stage 4. But he could reach the point where he has no evidence of illness or some progression of the disease. And at this point, that is our goal.”
