Google New Ai Tech can know when your house will catch fire
Forest fires are becoming an increasingly common threat worldwide. Australia’s record burns to Amazonas to the United States are devastating the environment. It is estimated that mortal forest fires that extended for Los Angeles in January caused more than $ 250 billion in damages.
Current satellite images are often low resolution, low frequently updated and cannot detect small fires. But what would happen if there was a way to detect forest fires before and with more precision before they become inferos furious?
Enter Firesat, a new satellite project designed to detect and track early forest fires. How early? The project aims to detect a fire that is simply 270 square feet, approximately the size of a classroom, in 20 minutes. It can also detect fires of two to three acres, approximately the size of two soccer fields.

Find fires before and more exactly
He Fire constellation It will consist of more than 50 satellites when it is done. Satellites are equipped with six -band custom -band multispectral infrared cameras to capture adequate images for automatic learning algorithms to accurately identify forest fires, differentiating them from deceptive objects such as smokestacks.

Using artificial intelligence, Firesat quickly compares a place, wherever it is in the world, with previous images of that location, considering factors such as the nearby infrastructure and the local climate to determine if there is a fire.
“Differentiating between real fires and random ‘noise’ in the environment was a challenge,” says Chris Van Arsdale, who works on climatic and energy projects in Google.
The team even loaded a plane with sensors to experiment with its progress.
“The first time we used the plane, one of the members of our team lit a barbecue and a fire well in its backyard to be able to fly the plane and try it,” says Erica Brand, one of Firesat’s project managers. “And the sensors could pick it up.”

FIRESAT’s long -term vision takes shape
The first Firesat satellite has already been launched. The entire constellation must be in orbit by 2030. The satellite data will contribute to a global historical record of fire spread so that scientists can model and better understand the behavior of forest fires.

The team behind Firesat
Google Research and Satellite Manufacturer Mon Space are founding partners in the Fire Alliance of the EarthThe non -profit house for Firesat. Financing for the first satellite of the constellation comes in part of the IA collaboratives: forest fires, an initiative created by Google.org that summons non -profit organizations leaders, academic institutions, government agencies and companies around the joint objective of using AI to avoid the devastating impact of forest leakers.
As part of AI Collaborative, Google.org provided $ 13 million to support the launch of the first satellite in the Firesat constellation.
