Gop Bill would kill a 33 -year program that helps those of food coupons

It is not clear that the legislators who press for elimination really understand what the program does, said McCartney.
“In the conversations we have had with employees, they are not really familiar with the program,” he said, while pointing out the use of the “Old Data” committee to justify the cut.

The Chamber Committee cited a 2019 study conducted by the government’s responsibility office in a language that supports the elimination of the program. This study did not conclude that the program is ineffective, as the committee said, only that more information must be collected to ensure that the program meets its objectives.

Instead, both studies reported a “significant” improvement in the food options of ED SNApt participants. They did not provide additional data when asked.

It reaches 1.7 million people annually, according to the University of Cornell, and represented only 0.04% of the total SNAP budget in 2021, according to a study published last year in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior (JNEB).
The JNEB study also concluded that the SNAP-ED program has proven to be “a critical pillar in the nation’s public health infrastructure.”

“Every dollar counts when it is making a budget, but to see it in terms of what the impact is and what is the scope for the cost, it really pales compared to other cuts that are being made,” said McCartney.
A representative of the SNAP-ED program of the state of New York, which reached more than 2.2 million people last year through their various services and activities, similarly, called it “essential.”
“As with other cuts and changes in related costs proposed by the Republicans of Congress, cut funds for nutritional education does nothing to help Americans and only increases the risk that New Yorkers need food insecurity and economic difficulties,” said the representative in a statement.
Republicans have pressed mass cuts to the Snap general program by arguing that their expenses have been unjustifiably fired in recent years, despite the fact that registration only increases minimally.
SNAP expenses have almost doubled from $ 60 billion to $ 110 billion since 2019. Despite this increase in expenses, registration has only grown by 14%, from 36 million to 42 million, said the Chamber Committee.

This program is similar to the SNAP-E program, since it offers nutritional education, but specifically to low-income families, children, adult caregivers and pregnant women or adolescents, regardless of pressure registration.
