House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) argued that Americans “deserve answers” ​​after the Trump administration joined forces with Israel last week to enter a deadly conflict with Iran.

During Sunday’s episode of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” moderator Kristen Welker asked Jeffries what he thought about NBC News’ report that President Donald Trump has privately considered sending troops on the ground to Iran.

“Is there any scenario in which you would support sending US forces to Iran, Leader Jeffries?” she questioned.

The Democratic leader responded: “No, and in fact candidate Trump suggested that under no circumstances should American servicemen and women be in danger in this particular type of situation, particularly as it relates to another endless war in the Middle East.”

“We are deeply saddened at this time by the loss of six brave and heroic service men and women who have already lost their lives,” he continued. “We will continue to pray for their families and loved ones.”

Jeffries then stated: “The American people deserve answers from the administration about how we are going to move forward in a way that makes America safer, not more vulnerable.”

On Saturday, Trump commented that U.S. troops could “possibly” deploy boots to Iran while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One.

After a reporter asked Trump if there were any circumstances under which he would send troops to Iran, he responded: “I don’t even want to talk about that right now. I don’t think that’s an appropriate question; you know I’m not going to answer it. Could there be? Possibly, for very good reasons, there have to be very good reasons.”

He added: “I would say that if we ever did it, they would be so depleted that they couldn’t fight at ground level.”

At the beginning of the interview, Jeffries proclaimed that Americans “don’t want to see billions of dollars spent to bomb Iran and the Middle East” at the same time that Republicans and Trump “aren’t willing to spend a dime to reduce their grocery bills” or “make it more affordable to go see a doctor” or fix “this affordability crisis that is very real in the United States of America.”
