Hamilton, Elton John, Amy Winehouse added to the National Recording Registry
The National Recording Registry of the Congress Library announced on Wednesday that 25 new recordings were included in the registry, including Amy Winehouse “Back To Black”, the original cast cast of the “Hamilton” of Broadway and the 1973 album by Elton John “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”.
The sounds chosen for preservation have “cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the solid recorded inheritance of the nation,” said the librarian of Congress Carla Hayden in a press release.
“These are the sounds of America: our broad history and culture. The National Recording Registry is the reproduction list of our nation evolving,” said Hayden. “The Library of Congress is proud and honored to select these audio treasures worth preservation, including iconic music in a variety of genres, field recordings, sports history and even the sounds of our daily lives with technology.”
In 2022, the National Recording Registry Board began choosing recordings to be preserved. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have to Dream” was one of the 50 recordings chosen the first year. Since then, 675 recordings have been added to the registration.
This year’s selections include folk, country, pop, sports, comedy and even a video game sound. Minecraft is the second soundtrack of the video game to join the registry. In 2023, the theme of Super Mario Brothers was added.

In a video posted on Instagram, Elton John said he is not a “formula writer.”
“I didn’t think ‘Bennie and The Jets’ was a success,” said John. “I did not think that ‘do not let the sun get on me’ it was a success. And that is what makes writing so special. You do not know what you think of and how special it could be.”

Tracy Chapman, whose 1988 homonym album includes his successful song “Fast Car” and was added to this record this year, said in the video that was awake late at night when the first line, “You have a fast car”, from the song came to it.
“The question is, who is you and after what the car is about?” Chapman said. “It is somewhat a process of answering questions.”
