London — Adolf Hitler probably suffered from the genetic disease Kallmann syndrome, researchers and documentary filmmakers said Thursday, after conducting DNA tests on the Nazi dictator’s blood. According to the US’s Cleveland Clinic, the syndrome can “disrupt the process that drives puberty” and manifest in symptoms including undescended testicles and a micropenis.
The research also quashes the suggestion that Hitler had Jewish ancestry, the researcher says.
Popular songs of World War II often mocked Hitler’s anatomy, but lacked scientific basis. The findings of an international team of scientists and historians now appear to confirm long-standing suspicions about their sexual development.
“No one has really been able to explain why Hitler was so uncomfortable around women throughout his life, or why he probably never had intimate relationships with women,” said Alex Kay of the University of Potsdam. “But now that we know he had Kallmann syndrome, this could be the answer we were looking for.”
The results of the investigation are presented in a new documentary, “Hitler’s DNA: Blueprint of a Dictator,” which will air Saturday.

The test was made possible after investigators obtained a sample of Hitler’s blood from a piece of material taken from the couch on which he shot himself.
The tests found a “high probability” that Hitler had Kallmann syndrome, although Britain’s Guardian newspaper said in a Thursday article criticizing the upcoming documentary that, “in their attempt to authenticate the blood,” the research team “failed to obtain a new DNA sample from any of Hitler’s surviving relatives in Austria and the United States, who are understandably averse to media exposure.”
Hitler’s DNA tests showed “very high” scores (in the top one percent) for predisposition to autism, schizophrenia and biopolar disorder, show creators Blink Films said.
However, the Guardian article said that many scientists are not comfortable using the type of genetic tests cited by the researchers, known as “polygenic risk scores,” to indicate the likelihood of an individual developing such disorders.
“Polygenic risk scores say something about the population as a whole, not about individuals,” honorary professor David Curtis, of the Institute of Genetics at University College London, told The Guardian. “If a test shows that you are in the top percentile of polygenic risk, the actual risk of acquiring a condition may still be very low, even for conditions that are strongly influenced by genetic factors.”
The research team emphasized that such conditions, even if Hitler had them, could also not explain or excuse the Nazi leader’s warmongering or racist policies.
It is estimated that more than 50 million people died in World War II, including Six million Jews were systematically murdered..
Geneticist Turi King, known for identifying the remains of medieval king Richard III and who also worked on the project, said Hitler’s genes placed him in a category of people the Nazis often sent to the gas chambers.
“Hitler’s policies revolve entirely around eugenics,” says the ancient DNA and forensics expert at the University of Bath in western England.
“If he could have looked at his own DNA… he almost certainly would have sent himself,” he said.
Analysis “debunks the myth” that Hitler had a Jewish grandfather
The DNA results also rule out possibility that Hitler had a Jewish grandfather through her grandmother, who was rumored to have become pregnant by an employer whose home she worked at.
“DNA analysis debunks this myth by showing that the Y chromosome data matches the DNA of Hitler’s male relative. If he had Jewish ancestry (through an outside relationship), that match would not be there,” the producer added.
Russia’s top diplomat, veteran Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, cited the baseless theory of Hitler’s Jewish lineage in 2022 while defending Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which the Kremlin baselessly claimed was aimed at “denazify” the neighboring countryled by Jewish President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
