Shanghai is no stranger to amazing feats.

In the last example, a historic building by Shanghai moved by robots is capturing global attention. The relocation of the complex in Huayang, a Shikumen -style building that weighs around 7,500 metric tons (approximately 8,267 tons of USA.) And that covers approximately 43,400 square feet, is really rewritten the rules.

This ambitious project is driven by an army of 432 small robots that are moving the massive structure of about 33 feet every day to give way to a new underground development. We are going to immerse ourselves in how this is happening, why it matters and what it means to the future of urban preservation.

What makes Shanghai’s historic building move by robots so special?

The Huayanli complex is a set of three brick and wood buildings built between the 1920s and 1930s. Located in the heart of the historical area of Zhangyuan de Shanghai, these structures are classic examples of Shikumen architecture, which is a unique combination of Western and Chinese design. Zhangyuan is over 140 years old and is one of the largest and best preserved Shikumen neighborhoods in Shanghai.

Why does a Shanghai historic building move by robots?

The relocation is not just for the show. The city is building a three -story underground center under the complex that will include more than 570,000 square feet of cultural and commercial space, a parking lot with more than 100 points and a transport center that will connect three main subway lines. When preserving the Huayanli historical complex on the ground while adding a modern infrastructure below, Shanghai is finding an intelligent balance between honoring his inheritance and embraceing progress.

The challenges: tight spaces and dense history

Moving a building of this size is difficult enough, but the challenge is multiplied by the dense network of narrow alleys of Zhangyuan and closely full historic buildings. Traditional relocation methods would simply not fit. The historical meaning of the area also means that any error could damage the irreplaceable architecture, including the “great lounge” of 1928 that once housed a patriotic night school.

How 432 robots are moving a historic building of Shanghai

Instead of using cranes or excavators, engineers put 432 small robots for walking to work. These robots gently lift the building and move it slowly forward, inch, covering approximately 33 feet every day. To achieve this incredible level of precision, the project is based on several advanced technologies. Special low clarity drilling robots, which can be operated remotely, navigate adjusted halls and doors to create new bases under the historical structure.

Robots that move on Earth equipped with folding mechanical arms, of just under four feet wide, use artificial intelligence to say the difference between clay and solid obstacles. Engineers also use construction and scan information modeling of points clouds to create highly detailed 3D planes. These digital models help the team plan exact movement routes, avoid potential collisions and design curved routes to eliminate the soil.

To maintain the efficient construction site and minimize the interruption, the soil is carried out using a conveyor belt system, as well as an assembly line. The movement is only temporary. Once the underground construction is finished, the Huayanli complex will be carefully returned to its original place, completely restored and preserved, now sitting on a modern underground installation.

Kurt’s Key Takeways

Not every day a complete historical building is made to walk through a block of the city, but the Huayanli project in Shanghai shows that with the right technology and a little imagination, even the oldest neighborhoods can be part of the urban landscape of tomorrow. This combination of preservation and innovation offers a fascinating vision of how cities can grow without losing their soul. Who would have thought that robots could become the unrecognized heroes of inheritance?
