Zhangyuan is over 140 years old and is one of the largest and best preserved Shikumen neighborhoods in Shanghai.

These robots gently lift the building and move it slowly forward, inch, covering approximately 33 feet every day. To achieve this incredible level of precision, the project is based on several advanced technologies. Special low clarity drilling robots, which can be operated remotely, navigate adjusted halls and doors to create new bases under the historical structure.

Robots that move on Earth equipped with folding mechanical arms, of just under four feet wide, use artificial intelligence to say the difference between clay and solid obstacles. Engineers also use construction and scan information modeling of points clouds to create highly detailed 3D planes. These digital models help the team plan exact movement routes, avoid potential collisions and design curved routes to eliminate the soil.

To maintain the efficient construction site and minimize the interruption, the soil is carried out using a conveyor belt system, as well as an assembly line. The movement is only temporary. Once the underground construction is finished, the Huayanli complex will be carefully returned to its original place, completely restored and preserved, now sitting on a modern underground installation.
