John Oliver, the host of “Last Week Tonight” by HBO, this weekend expressed his sadness for News’s decision to cancel “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Oliver, a frequent guest in his “Daily Show” colleague by Ontime Stephen Colbert, described the movement as an “incredibly sad” and “terrible and terrible for the world of comedy.”

But the American English comedian added: “I am partly excited to see what they are going to do for the next 10 months.”

“It’s very, very, very sad news,” said Oliver. “I hope to see what it will do next because that man will not stop.”

Colbert’s final episode will be broadcast in May 2026.

News announced the end of the “The Late Show” franchise, which began with David Letterman in 1993 and that Colbert took over in 2015, last week.

The Network said it is “purely a financial decision against a defiant backdrop in Late Night” and said that it is not related “in any way to the performance, content or other issues of the program that occur in Paramount.”
