Comedian Jon Stewart said he is trying to stay on “The Daily Show” as his contract expires in December.

Asked by The New Yorker’s David Remnick on Sunday if he would renew his contract with the Comedy Central political show, Stewart told the New Yorker Festival audience, according to Deadline:

“We’re working to stay. Look, the other thing to remember is that it’s not as clear cut as all that… They’ve already done things that bother me. But then, if I had integrity, maybe I would stand up and say, ‘I’m out.’ Or maybe the most ethical thing would be to stay there and keep fighting in the trenches.”

Deadline reported that Stewart also said, “You don’t compromise on what you do and you do it until they tell you to leave.”

After a shocking exit in 2015, Stewart returned to “The Daily Show” in February 2024, intending to host Monday nights during the election, but announced last October that he would remain there through 2025.

Stewart has criticized “Daily Show” parent company Paramount for bowing to Trump’s “60 Minutes” demand and paying the president $16 million to facilitate the administration’s approval of a merger with Skydance. (The company is now called Paramount Skydance.) He also openly disputed his employer’s claim that Stephen Colbert, the fierce Trump critic, and “The Late Show” will go off the air forever on News, a sister network under the Paramount Skydance umbrella, in May due to a financial decision.

News also appears to be taking a right turn with the hiring of Bari Weiss as editor in chief. Weiss is a “Trump-friendly figure,” MSNBC recently wrote. “News Evening News” anchor John Dickerson announced Monday that he will leave the network at the end of the year.
