Kate Winslet’s former co-star just shared some really healthy insight into her friendship with Leonardo DiCaprio

From time to time, the world rediscovers the truly healthy friendship between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio and falls in love with them all over again, and the two stars remain incredibly close after playing lovers Jack and Rose in the 1997 film Titanic:

They were then reunited on screen for the 2008 film Revolutionary Road:

And while it may have been almost three decades since the couple met, they’re still as close as ever: Leo even walked Kate down the aisle at her wedding to Edward Abel Smith, aka Ned Rocknroll, in 2012.

And actor Adam Shapiro shared some very sweet insight into Kate and Leo’s relationship during a recent appearance on the General Assembly podcast with Becky Sloviter.

For reference, Adam and Kate worked together on the 2015 film Steve Jobs, and Adam told host Becky that they met at the 2016 SAG Awards in Los Angeles, where British Kate suggested they and their partners have dinner together after the ceremony.

“I said, ‘Yeah, okay. It’s our town, we’ll take you to dinner, Kate,'” Adam recalled. “And she said, ‘Well, why don’t we eat where I stay because it’s so much easier?’ I was like, ‘Oh, because you’re super famous… What hotel are you in?’”

“She’s like, ‘Oh, no. I always stay with Leo when I’m in town,'” he later revealed, later recounting his surprise at being invited to Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio’s home. “I thought, ‘Shall we go to Leo’s house right now?’ She said, ‘Yeah, he’ll order food and we’ll…’ He’d just won Best Actor for The Revenant! Just a few minutes ago!

“So I said, ‘Hey, I didn’t know we were going to Leonardo DiCaprio’s house, can we stop by the liquor store on Sunset and get something?’ She says, ‘Of course!’” Adam continued. “So, two of us jump out of her car, she’s barefoot in the most beautiful dress ever, dripping with these awards show diamonds, I’m in a tuxedo. We go in, have a nice bottle of whiskey, and besides, I’m starving because we didn’t eat anything, so I grab a bag of Goldfish cheddar cheese.”

“I’m the last person out of the car when we get to Leo’s house, and he’s standing in the driveway and he’s like, ‘Ahhh, you guys are here!’” she continued. “I hand Kate the bottle of whiskey and she hands the bottle of whiskey to Leo. I leave, I’m the last one there and I only have this bag of Goldfish.”

“And I don’t want to say, ‘Oh, that whiskey was mine,’” Adam laughed, before sharing Leo’s genuinely grateful reaction to being gifted a bag of Goldfish. “So I gave him the Goldfish and said, ‘They’re cheddar!’ And he says: ‘Thank you! Thank you! Thanks, man!’”

“We went in, we drank champagne, we had the best night of our lives,” he concluded. “The first thing I do when I get home at like 3 in the morning is text all my kids: ‘Hey, you won’t believe the night I had, Winslet brought me to DiCaprio’s house! It was the coolest house I’ve ever seen in my life!'”

And the fact that Kate stays with Leo whenever she’s in Los Angeles (and feels comfortable enough there to invite other people over for dinner) is perhaps not surprising considering how much they compliment each other in interviews, seek each other out on red carpets and at award ceremonies, and have been each other’s biggest cheerleaders over the years.

Previously, a video montage of their friendship went viral on social media, including the moment Leo blew Kate a kiss from the audience as she accepted her 2009 Golden Globe Award, with Kate saying in her speech at the time: “Leo, I’m so happy I can be here and tell you how much I love you and how much I’ve loved you for 13 years. I love you with all my heart, I really do.”

And in 2016, Kate burst with pride when Leo dominated the awards circuit before winning his first Oscar for his performance in The Revenant. In a clip from that time, she enthusiastically admits, “I’ve been so focused on him and Leo winning everything!”

But despite how much some fans may want the two to get together romantically, Kate has repeatedly insisted that there has never been any attraction between them. In fact, back in 1998, when they began their friendship, Kate laughed off claims that they were an item in an interview with Rolling Stone, saying that a romance would be “absolutely like incest.”

She reiterated this in 2014, telling Marie Claire: “I think the reason the friendship works is because there was never anything romantic. It’s very disappointing for people to hear that, because in the soap opera of Kate and Leo’s story we fell in love at first sight and had a million kisses.”

“But we never really did. He always saw me as one of the guys. I’ve never really been a girly girl,” she shared.

And in 2017, Kate said of Leo: “Luckily, and this was the lucky thing, we never liked each other. I know it’s really upsetting to hear that, I’m sorry. We never really did. So that meant we were able to have this… Being able to make fun of each other, which we still do, which is really amazing.”

He has also spoken at length about the nature of their close friendship, saying of Titanic in a 2017 interview: “I left with one of the best friendships of my life in my back pocket, which is Leo.”

Sharing more about how they spend their time together, Kate added to Glamor that same year: “Sometimes we quote one line from Titanic to each other. Because only we can, and we find it really funny.”

“You don’t even want to know the last conversation we had, because it was so funny and made me laugh a lot,” Kate continued. “We found ourselves saying to each other, ‘Can you imagine if the world really knew the stupid things we say?’ “I’m not going to tell you what we really talked about, but yeah, we’re very, very close.”

Leo has been equally complimentary of Kate, calling her one of his “best friends” in a 2010 interview with Esquire, where he added: “We have the utmost trust in each other.”

And in 2021, Kate said she “couldn’t stop crying” when she was finally able to reunite with Leo after spending three years apart amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with The Guardian, she shared: “I’ve known him for half my life! It’s not like I’d met in New York or he’d been in London, and we’d had a chance to have dinner or have coffee and catch up. We haven’t been able to leave our countries.”
