Maryland’s senator Chris Van Hollen, returned from his trip to El Salvador on Friday after Meeting with Kilmar Abrego Garciathe man who was deported due to an administrative error.

“His conversation with me was the first communication he had with someone out of prison since he was kidnapped. He said he felt very sad to be in a prison because he had not committed any crime,” said Van Hollen.

“He told me, and this was yesterday, eight days ago, so nine days ago as of today, he was transferred to another detention center in Santa Ana, where the conditions are better. But he said, despite the best conditions, he still does not have access to any news of the outside world and there is no capacity to communicate with anyone in the outside world,” said Van Hollen.
Abrego García was “traumatized” in Cecot, says Van Hollen
Van Hollen said he asked Abrego García how he was dealing with his circumstances.
“He said that thinking about you, members of your family, is what gave you history to persevere, follow the day to day, even in these horrible circumstances,” said Van Hollen.
During his conversation, Abrego García described his experience in Cecot.
Abrego García said that after being arrested by ICE officials, he was taken to a Baltimore detention center, where a phone call was denied. Then he was transferred again to another installation in Texas before being put on an plane to El Salvador.
“I don’t know if it were hours or days of period, he was handcuffed, chained and placed on an plane, along with others, where they could not see outside the windows. There was no way to see where they were on the plane, they did not know with certainty where they were going. They landed in El Salvador,” said Van Hollen.
After arriving at the prison, Abrego García was placed in a cell with another 25 prisoners.
“The government in this case, the Trump administration, is affirming the right to hide residents of this country in foreign prisons without an appearance of due process that is the basis of our constitutional order,” said Senator Van Hollen. “He was traumatized for being in Cecot and fearful of many of the prisoners in other cells of cells who called him and made fun of several ways, he told me.”
Van Hollen faced challenges trying to meet with Abrego Garcia
During his trip, they are initially facing challenges in trying to coordinate a meeting with Abrego García.

Abrego Garcia’s Deportation
Abrego García is a native of El Salvador who illegally entered the United States in 2011.
He was arrested by immigration and customs agents (ICE) of the United States in March when he left his job in Baltimore.
He and another 200 migrants were transported to Cecot in El Salvador by plane to the Trump administration direction.
His deportation caused a legal battle since he was under a protection order granted by an immigration judge in 2019. The order of “elimination retention” should have prevented him from being deported to El Salvador.
ICE officials admitted in a presentation of the court that the deportation of Abrego García occurred due to an administrative error, although they did not move to correct the error.
