MAGA representative falls into a trap she created after insulting Mamdani
Rep. Nancy Mace’s (R.S.C.) sarcastic congratulatory message to New York City didn’t go as she planned.
On Tuesday, Zohran Mamdani made history by being elected not only New York City’s youngest mayor in more than a century, but also the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor. The news didn’t exactly fill Mace with immense joy, and he turned to X to share his feelings.
“Bread lines are about to become a real thing in New York. Congratulations,” Mace wrote on Tuesday, presumably referring to Mamdani’s democratic socialist platform that his right-wing critics say will bring economic ruin to the city.
According to Merriam-Webster, a bread line is defined as “a line of people waiting to receive food,” making Mace’s statement ironic given the current government shutdown and its impact on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
At midnight on September 30, the government shut down as Democrats and Republicans failed to reach a consensus on funding healthcare for the American people. The Trump administration suspended SNAP benefits on Nov. 1, claiming there was not enough money to pay them during the shutdown. (On Thursday, a Rhode Island judge ordered the administration to find the money and fully fund the month’s benefits.)
The irony was not lost on social media users, many of whom were quick to point out the role Mace and his fellow Republicans played in suspending SNAP.

“You are literally starving children by withholding SNAP benefits,” one user wrote.
Another commented: “There are bread lines all over America right now because Trump is holding SNAP hostage.”
Others continued to highlight how Mace’s party has affected Americans’ access to SNAP benefits.
“Republicans have already started bread lines by refusing to release SNAP funds,” said another.
Progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen even shared a video showing a long bread line from October 31 (the day before SNAP benefits were suspended) and captioned the post: “This bread line is literally from last week under Republican control of the House, Senate and White House.”
