Mayor Jacob Frey has a strong message for people who were offended by him telling Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to “get the hell out of Minneapolis.”

Appearing on NBC “Meet the press” On Sunday, moderator Kristen Welker asked Frey if he feels responsible for “lowering the temperature” in his city amid nationwide protests following the shooting death of Renee Good, 37, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis last week.

“Of course I have a responsibility to lower the temperature. That’s part of my role as mayor. And by the way, the protests here in Minneapolis are peaceful,” he responded. “We had, I don’t know, about 10,000 people protesting and marching yesterday. And pretty much everything was a very peaceful expression of First Amendment rights.”

The mayor of Minneapolis went on to speak directly to those who were “offended” by his explicit language, telling them directly, “I’m sorry I offended your delicate ears.”

Frey then argued that Good’s killing by ICE is the “inflammatory element here, not the F-bomb,” adding, “I’m sure we’ve all heard [the word] before.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Welker asked Frey about his previous comments accusing ICE of being “unconstitutional” and whether he would “support abolishing ICE.”

Frey clarified his comments.

“Well, first of all, I didn’t say that ICE’s enforcement of the law was unconstitutional. What I said is that the way they’re doing it is unconstitutional,” he responded.

Frey told Welker that ICE cannot “solely discriminate based on” someone who appears to be of a certain ethnicity, noting that “we have had pregnant women dragged down the street” and “teenagers who are U.S. citizens simply detained” by ICE agents.

“So look, do I think we should just abolish the entire entity that is responsible for immigration enforcement? No. But the way it’s used doesn’t make sense,” Frey explained. “I’m not calling for the Department of Justice to be abolished. I’m not calling for the Office of Management and Budget to be abolished.”

He added: “I am saying that the way the Trump administration is using these institutions right now is wrong and, to be clear, it is unconstitutional.”

Last week, Frey criticized ICE for “trying to misrepresent” the fatal shooting of Good as “an action of self-defense” at the same press conference in which he aimed the insult at ICE.

“Having seen the [shooting] “I myself want to tell everyone directly: That’s nonsense,” Frey said at a Jan. 7 press conference. “This was an officer who recklessly used power and it resulted in someone’s death.”

Frey also accused ICE agents of not being in Minneapolis to “create security in this city” or to “provide security in the United States.”

“What they are doing is causing chaos and mistrust. They are destroying families, they are sowing chaos in our streets and, in this case, literally killing people,” he added.
