How Pope’s official attire is chosen

These tailoring companies anxiously expect New Pope to see if their papal garments are chosen. 04:06

As the papal conclave ends with the White smoke appearance of the Sistine Chapel to indicate the Selection of a new Popethe tailors are creating papal clothing: the official attire of the Pope.

For centuries, papal garments have been created along the cobbled streets of Rome near the Vatican, where expert artisans maintain traditions dating from generations.

Raniero Mancinelli, whose store was inaugurated in the 1960s a few steps from the Vatican, has prepared three sotcias in different sizes for the new pontiff.

“Three size … small, large,” said the 86 -year -old player to News themezone through a translator. “You don’t know if the next Pope will be small, medium or large.”

After having worked with three potatoes: John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, Mancinelli hopes to add a room to his prestigious client list.

When asked what Pope was his favorite, Mancinelli laughed and responded in Italian “secret.”

The Gammarelli family represents the other prominent establishment of papal tailoring. His business, now in his sixth generation and directed by Alessia Gammarelli, the first owner of the family, has served eight popes during his 200 years of history.

The basic garment of the Pope is a hand -stitched white wool, sometimes adorned with a burgundy layer and even elbow, a characteristic of Pope Francis that he chose not to use. The outfit is completed with a white skull called zucchini.

When asked about future papal style preferences, Gammarelli said: “I don’t know. Good question.”

While Gammarelli has seen images of papal clothes hanging inside the Vatican’s tears room, he said he cannot confirm that they are the work of his family until the new Pope makes his first public appearance.
