Mexico Prison Riot leaves 7 dead, 11 injured after inmates ask for protection from the authorities against threats

Seven inmates died amid disturbances in a prison in the State of Eastern Mexico of Veracruzthe authorities said Sunday, with another 11 prisoners suffering from injuries.

The fight exploded for the first time on Saturday afternoon in an installation in Tuxpan and continued throughout the night, authorities said.

The state forces of Veracruz, together with military support, carried out a “coordinated operation” and could enter the prison on Sunday morning and recover control, said a statement from the Ministry of Security of the State.

“As a result of the riots, we report the tragic death of seven inmates and 11 injured people,” said the statement.

After the fight, three inmates were transferred to another prison in Veracruz, although the authorities did not reveal details.

Local media reported that the prisoners began the riots after asking the authorities to guarantee their safety when they face the threats of prisoners accused of being part of a violent criminal group called Shadow.

Conflicts between posters and other groups of crimes organized in Mexico are often replicated in prison populations, which fight over.
