Michael Che Tried to Joke About ICE on SNL and It Didn’t Really Land
michael che is being criticized for an ICE joke that lacked warmth.
The “Weekend Update” co-host made a joke about Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in “Saturday night live“That didn’t sit well with many social media users.
“I understand that ICE agents are people, supposedly,” Che began his joke on Saturday night. “And they have a job to do. But at some point, while you’re pepper spraying old ladies or shooting a nurse, do you ever stop and ask yourself, ‘Are we idiots?'”

Although Che’s joke was not flattering, many fans felt it was too soft considering it was made just hours after the 37-year-old intensive care nurse Alex Pretti was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on Saturday. The disturbing incident follows the shooting death of Minneapolis mother Renee Good. earlier this month, and growing fears about the terrifying ways the Department of Homeland Security is using the agency amid President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration measures.
“Man, ‘we’re idiots’ doesn’t measure up to the moment. You know Che can go further. He has. Why the hell is anyone throwing punches right now?” a user.

Beyond redditone user argued that, considering the circumstances, the show should have canceled the episode entirely, calling the decision “bad taste.”
“I know SNL is supposed to be fun, but this is absolutely not something to take lightly right now,” the user argued.
“Nothing that’s happening has comedy written into it. This needs to be taken 100% seriously and practical steps need to be taken. All this does is numb stupid people to what’s going on and make them think, well, if they’re joking about it, it can’t be a big deal. People need to wake up.”

Others on Reddit were offended that Che implied that the agents were simply “shooting” Pretti.
Video taken on Saturday tomorrow by eyewitnesses showed at least six masked federal agents Knocking Pretti to the ground before firing 10 shots, fatally wounding him.
“‘Shooting a nurse’ is a very interesting way to describe how to restrain a nurse and empty her magazine,” said one Redditor.
“Yes, ‘shoot’ does not convey the senseless tragedy of the situation in all“said another Reddit user. “There was no reason to downplay it, especially at that point in the day. “Everyone had seen the images.”
“The most offensive part of that joke was how disrespectful it was toward the murdered victim, not ICE,” one Reddit user added.

Fans’ disappointment with Che’s joke is likely compounded by frustrations with the Trump administration’s claims about the incident.
Pretti was initially seen in several eyewitness videos simply filming a confrontation between protesters and officers with his cell phone. The videos show that an officer approached Pretti, sprayed chemicals in his eyes and pushed him to the ground before several officers tackled him and ultimately killed him.
Department of Homeland Security alleged in a statement that Pretti approached Border Patrol agents with a gun and “violently resisted,” and Border Patrol Commanding General Greg Bovino said an agent fired “defensive shots.”
None of these claims made by DHS are supported by publicly available video evidence. Pretti appeared to have a gun concealed in his waistband, but was not using it during the time of the incident.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a press conference that Pretti was a “legal gun owner with a permit to carry.”
