Miley Cyrus reveals the ‘powerful’ therapy that helped her conquer her fear of the stage

Miley Cyrus has acted for some of the world’s largest audiences, but for years, she struggled silently on stage behind the scene.

In a recent interview, the Pop icon revealed that a therapy called EMDR was essential to stop its anxiety.

“I love it. It saved my life,” he told New York Times in May. “I have never been scheduled. Never.”

What is EMDR?

EMDR, or desensitization and reprocessing of the eye movement, is an alternative therapy designed to help people process unresolved trauma and emotional pain.

“It is a powerful method based on research that helps people to heal painful or distressing experiences that have” stuck “in the brain,” Dr. Kate Campbell, marriage and family licensed therapist and founder of Bayview Therapy in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, told News Digital.

“EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, often through eye movements, hitting or sound, to help the brain reprocess those annoying memories,” added Campbell, who leads a team of EMDR professionals.

She elaborated: “At the neurological level, EMDR helps to change the memory of being stored in the emotional part of the brain (the tonsil) to the most logical and rational part (the prefrontal cortex).”

Once that change occurs, according to Campbell, people can often think about experience without feeling overwhelmed.

“Emotional intensity and negative beliefs linked to him begin to fade,” he said.

The objective is not to forget the experience, said Campbell, but to help the brain “to understand, integrate and free it, so that people can move forward more clearly, trust and peace.”

“When checking the old fears in a safe and controlled environment and reprocessing them through bilateral stimulation, the brain can change those memories of a place of greater anguish to emotional neutrality.”

The root cause of performance anxiety often comes from previous negative experiences, such as a shameful moment of childhood, fear of judgment or the pressure of being perfect, which are “blocked” in the nervous system, according to Campbell.

“Over time, these feelings can turn anxiety that appears in moments of high pressure, such as being on stage or speaking in public.”

EMDR is especially effective for performance anxiety because it addresses the underlying causes, not only symptoms, the expert said.

Therapy aims to replace negative memories and beliefs with those of support and empowerment, Campbell said.

“Many people notice that their bodies feel more relaxed and their thoughts become clearer and quiet after a few sessions,” he said. “That change can open the door to greater confidence, presence and peace in performance environments.”
